Turkcell, Vodafone or Türk Telekom: Which Network Does Your Turkey eSIM Use?

Last updated on 10 October 2026

The POVNOMAD Turkey eSIM runs on Vodafone Türkiye and starts at €2.90 for 1 GB over 7 days. The Turkey eSIM Premium adds Türk Telekom as a second network from €3.50 and, according to its product page, switches to the stronger of the two by itself. Airalo and Nomad use Türk Telekom, Holafly names Turkcell and Türk Telekom. As of 30 September 2026.

Turkcell has the most subscribers in Turkey and measured the fastest 5G speeds in April 2026. None of our Turkey eSIMs uses Turkcell. Vodafone kept its users on 5G for the largest share of time, and Türk Telekom scored highest on 5G reliability.

Which network does each Turkey eSIM use?

A travel eSIM from abroad joins one of the three Turkish networks as a roaming guest. The provider’s contract decides which one, your phone does not. As of 30 September 2026:

Networks and prices read on 30.09.2026 on povnomad.com, airalo.com/turkey-esim, esim.holafly.com and nomadesim.com. Saily’s website refused our automated request on that day (HTTP 403); the last archived version of its Turkey page (13 July 2026) names no network. Our product pages describe the listed networks as examples that can change at short notice. “–” = no such plan on the survey date.

Premium gives you Vodafone and Türk Telekom on one eSIM. If one of them has a gap on your route, the eSIM can fall back on the other. Turkcell is not part of either plan. Our Turkey eSIM provider comparison lists the prices of all durations side by side.

How do Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom compare?

By subscribers, Turkcell led at the end of 2025 with 39.2 per cent, ahead of Türk Telekom (TT Mobil) with 31.6 and Vodafone with 29.2 per cent (BTK market report Q4 2025). For 5G, the measurement firm Opensignal compared the first 30 days after the launch, 1 to 30 April 2026:

Turkcell holds the widest 3.5 GHz band and was the fastest. Vodafone carried about 40 per cent of its 5G traffic on 700 MHz, a band that Opensignal says helps extend coverage, and kept its users on 5G the longest. Türk Telekom led on reliability, with Vodafone five points behind. In city centres you will notice the speed gaps; on a coastal road or in a valley, what counts is which network has a mast near you.

Can you use 5G in Turkey with a travel eSIM?

Yes, if your phone supports 5G and you are in a 5G area. Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom switched on 5G on 1 April 2026 in all 81 provinces, starting with city and district centres; rural areas stay on 4.5G for now (teknoblog, 31 March 2026). Our provider data lists 5G for the Vodafone and Türk Telekom connections of all our Turkey plans, and the product pages say “4G & 5G where available”.

In April 2026, Opensignal measured an average 5G download speed of 201.3 Mbit/s in Turkey, compared with 38.5 Mbit/s on 4G. For maps, messaging and photo uploads, 4G is enough. You feel the difference when you upload videos or share your connection with a laptop via hotspot.

Which network for the coast, Cappadocia and the east?

None of the three operators publishes coverage figures per region that you could compare. The crowd-sourced nPerf coverage map shows measured signal per operator, so check your route there before you choose. A rough guide, prices as of 30 September 2026:

Unlimited Smart gives you 1 GB of high-speed data every 24 hours, after which you keep browsing at up to 1 Mbit/s. Which plan suits Istanbul, Antalya or Bodrum in detail is in our guide eSIM for Istanbul, Antalya and all of Turkey.

Do you need to register your phone in Turkey?

Not for a normal holiday. According to the regulator BTK, a phone brought from abroad works for 120 days from your date of entry without registration (BTK consumer site). If you sign up for a Turkish SIM card in a shop, the operator links your phone’s IMEI to the new number, and you need your passport for that (MCKS, BTK’s device register).

One limit concerns data-only eSIMs. Turkey’s device registration regulation treats a foreign SIM that stays on a Turkish network for more than 90 days within 120 consecutive days without phone calls as permanent roaming, and operators then cut the device’s connection within 30 days (Articles 3 and 10 of the regulation, as amended on 2 July 2026). Our Turkey eSIMs carry data only. For a two-week holiday this plays no role; it can matter with our 50 GB plan valid for 180 days (€38.90). Airalo names the same threshold on its Turkey page and says you then have to register the IMEI and pay a one-time tax. What a Turkish SIM card costs and what happens to a phone on a local SIM after 120 days is covered in Turkey SIM Card for Tourists.

Why are some eSIM providers blocked in Turkey?

On 10 July 2025, the BTK blocked access from Turkey to the websites and apps of eight eSIM providers: Airalo, Saily, Holafly, Nomad, Instabridge, Mobimatter, Alosim and BNESIM (decision no. E-98966759-450.08-36681, reported by egirisim.com on 12 July 2025). The authority gave no reason. On 30 September 2026, Airalo’s own Turkey page still says: “You currently can’t purchase eSIMs in Turkey.” Holafly’s news page, updated on 7 August 2026, confirms that its site and app remain blocked in Turkey.

The block concerns the shops. The eSIMs of these providers keep using the Turkish networks, Airalo and Nomad via Türk Telekom. POVNOMAD is not named in the July 2025 decision; the BTK publishes no complete list, so buy and install any eSIM at home. Details and a checklist are in our article Turkey eSIM Blocked?

How do you choose the network by hand?

  1. At home: install the eSIM on Wi-Fi (instructions for iPhone and Android) and leave the line switched off. According to the product page, validity starts on first contact with the partner network, not at purchase.
  2. After landing: turn on the eSIM, set it as your mobile data line and enable data roaming for it.
  3. If your phone shows “No service”: on an iPhone open Settings > Mobile Service > your eSIM > Network Selection, turn off Automatic and pick Vodafone. On a Samsung open Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network operators and search. With Premium you can also pick Türk Telekom.

The personal eSIM link in your order email lists the networks your eSIM may use under “Networks”. Your home SIM can stay on for calls and texts; your provider bills those at its Turkey roaming rates, while our eSIMs carry data only.

Frequently asked questions

Which network does the POVNOMAD Turkey eSIM use?

The Standard Turkey eSIM uses Vodafone Türkiye and starts at €2.90 for 1 GB over 7 days. The Turkey eSIM Premium uses Vodafone Türkiye and Türk Telekom and, according to its product page, switches to the stronger network by itself; it starts at €3.50. Neither plan uses Turkcell. As of 30.09.2026.

Which mobile network is best in Turkey?

It depends on what you measure. In April 2026, Opensignal found Turkcell fastest on 5G at about 249 Mbit/s, Vodafone with the most time on 5G at 66 per cent, and Türk Telekom with the highest 5G reliability score. Turkcell also has the most subscribers, 39.2 per cent at the end of 2025 according to the BTK. For your trip, coverage along your route matters most.

Does my travel eSIM get 5G in Turkey?

Yes, where 5G is available and your phone supports it. Turkish operators launched 5G on 1 April 2026 in all 81 provinces, starting with city and district centres, while rural areas remain on 4.5G for now. Our Turkey eSIMs list 5G for Vodafone and Türk Telekom; the product pages say “4G & 5G where available”.

Do I have to register my phone’s IMEI as a tourist in Turkey?

Not for a normal holiday. According to the BTK, a phone brought from abroad works for 120 days from entry without registration. A data-only foreign SIM used for more than 90 days within 120 days without calls counts as permanent roaming, and operators cut the connection within 30 days. For stays that long, check the BTK rules before you travel.

Why can’t I buy an Airalo eSIM in Turkey?

Since the BTK decision of 10 July 2025, Airalo’s website and app are blocked in Turkey, along with Holafly, Saily, Nomad and four other providers. On 30.09.2026, Airalo’s Turkey page states that you currently cannot purchase eSIMs in Turkey. Airalo asks you to buy and install the eSIM before the trip; in Turkey it then runs on the Türk Telekom network.

Is the Premium eSIM worth it for Cappadocia or eastern Turkey?

If you travel between towns, yes: Premium can use Vodafone and Türk Telekom, so a gap in one network does not leave you offline. Unlimited Smart for 7 days costs €11.90 with Premium and €9.90 with Standard, a difference of €2.00. For a city break in Istanbul, the Standard eSIM is enough. As of 30.09.2026.

Can I choose the Turkish network myself?

Yes. Turn off automatic network selection in your phone’s mobile settings and pick the network by hand: Vodafone with the Standard eSIM, Vodafone or Türk Telekom with Premium. The eSIM link in your order email lists the permitted networks under “Networks”.

As of 30 September 2026. All prices were read in euros on that day on the povnomad.com product pages, airalo.com, esim.holafly.com and nomadesim.com and may change at any time.
