Sri Lanka eSIM Comparison 2026: Dialog or Mobitel, and Is There Unlimited?

Last updated on 30 September 2026

POVNOMAD sells no unlimited plan for Sri Lanka alone. Unlimited data comes with our South Asia eSIM, which covers Sri Lanka (on the Mobitel network) and five more countries: 7 days of Unlimited Smart (1 GB of high-speed data a day) cost €24.90, against €24.50 at Airalo with 3 GB a day and €25.50 at Holafly. For fixed data, Airalo is cheaper than our Sri Lanka eSIM: 10 GB for 30 days cost €10.50 there and €16.90 with us. Prices as of 30 September 2026.

We come out ahead on unlimited plans for 3, 10, 15 and 21 days and on a single gigabyte for €2.90. Dialog, the network with the widest coverage in Opensignal’s latest report, is in none of our Sri Lanka plans; among the three providers compared here, only Holafly names it.

Dialog, Mobitel or Hutch: which network do you get?

Sri Lanka has three mobile networks. Opensignal measured them from October to December 2025:

SLT Mobitel7.592.6 %6.4 %POVNOMAD (Sri Lanka eSIM depending on plan, South Asia eSIM), Airalo, Holafly

Source: Opensignal, Sri Lanka Mobile Network Experience Report, February 2026, measured 1 October to 29 December 2025. Networks per provider read on 30.09.2026 on povnomad.com, airalo.com and esim.holafly.com/de.

Dialog won Opensignal’s awards for coverage, time on network, reliability and consistent quality. SLT Mobitel took all four speed awards and the video award. Dialog and Mobitel launched commercial 5G in December 2025; Hutch did not bid for 5G spectrum and is expanding 4G in rural areas instead.

Our Sri Lanka eSIM runs on Mobitel or Hutch depending on the plan, both on 4G according to the product page. The South Asia eSIM uses Mobitel. Airalo runs its unlimited and data plans on Mobitel and its Ella+ plan with minutes and SMS on Hutch. Holafly lists Mobitel, Dialog and Hutch. If you want Dialog, Holafly is the only option in this comparison.

Read on 30.09.2026 on povnomad.com, airalo.com and esim.holafly.com/de. “–” = no plan for this duration. Unlimited Smart: 1 GB of high-speed data per 24 hours, then up to 1 Mbit/s. Airalo slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. Holafly names no threshold and says throttling lasts one day at most; it lets you share 1 GB per day of validity via hotspot.

At 7 days the three prices lie one euro apart, but Airalo gives you three times as much high-speed data per day as our Smart plan. For the same 3 GB a day, our South Asia eSIM with Unlimited XL costs €64.90 for 7 days, more than twice Airalo’s price. Our Unlimited Smart pays off if 1 GB a day covers you, for example with maps, messaging, ride apps and photo backups on hotel Wi-Fi.

Read on 30.09.2026. Holafly sells unlimited plans only for Sri Lanka. Our South Asia eSIM also has data packages, for example 10 GB for 30 days at €21.90.

From 5 GB up, Airalo costs less at every size on the survey date. With us, fixed data only makes sense for a short stopover with 1 GB. Our unlimited eSIM page explains the Smart, L and XL tiers, and the Travel eSIM Price Study 2026 compares the fair use rules of the big providers.

How much data do you need for Kandy, Ella and the south coast?

A typical two-week round trip runs from Colombo via Kandy into the hill country around Nanu Oya and Ella and on to the south coast. For that, 15 days of unlimited cost €43.90 with our South Asia eSIM, €44.50 at Airalo and €46.90 at Holafly. If you mostly use maps and messaging, 10 GB for 30 days at €10.50 from Airalo is the cheapest option in this comparison.

Sri Lanka Railways reports that trains between Badulla and Nanu Oya are running again after repairs to cyclone damage; Ella lies on that stretch. The railway’s homepage says nothing about the section from Kandy to Nanu Oya on 30 September 2026, so check it before you book. The hill-country line runs through dozens of numbered tunnels, so save tickets, maps and music on your phone before you board.

What should you sort out before you fly?

  1. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and leave the line switched off. Validity starts on first contact with the partner network in Sri Lanka, not at purchase (instructions for iPhone and Android).
  2. Apply for the free ETA visa before you travel through the official Sri Lankan ETA portal.
  3. Pack a power bank. Power is scarce and longer outages can happen, although the government told the state utility to spare tourist areas.

Sri Lanka plus India, Nepal or the Maldives on one eSIM?

Our South Asia eSIM covers Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. For a trip that combines Sri Lanka with India or Nepal, you install one profile. Our Asia eSIM for 14 countries does not include Sri Lanka.

The Maldives are in none of these plans. For a beach week after the round trip you need a separate eSIM or the Wi-Fi at your resort.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an unlimited eSIM for Sri Lanka?

Yes, at all three providers compared here, but not as a Sri Lanka-only plan at POVNOMAD. Our South Asia eSIM costs €24.90 for 7 days of Unlimited Smart with 1 GB of high-speed data a day. Airalo charges €24.50 with 3 GB a day, Holafly €25.50. As of 30.09.2026.

Dialog or Mobitel: which network is better for tourists?

In Opensignal’s report from February 2026, Dialog had the widest coverage (9.2 of 10 points) and the most time on network (93.6 %), while SLT Mobitel won all speed awards. POVNOMAD and Airalo use Mobitel, and our Sri Lanka eSIM also uses Hutch depending on the plan. Holafly lists Mobitel, Dialog and Hutch.

Which eSIM is cheapest for two weeks in Sri Lanka?

With fixed data, Airalo: 10 GB for 30 days cost €10.50, compared with €16.90 for our Sri Lanka eSIM. With unlimited data for 15 days, our South Asia eSIM costs €43.90 with 1 GB of high-speed data a day, Airalo €44.50 with 3 GB a day, Holafly €46.90. As of 30.09.2026.

Does my eSIM work on the train from Nanu Oya to Ella?

Yes, where the networks reach the line, but the hill-country line runs through dozens of numbered tunnels. Save tickets and maps before the ride. According to Sri Lanka Railways, trains between Badulla and Nanu Oya are running again after cyclone repairs; check the Kandy section before you book.

Can I buy the eSIM before I land in Colombo?

Yes, and that is the easier way. Install it at home on Wi-Fi and leave the line switched off. The validity of our eSIMs starts on first contact with the partner network in Sri Lanka, not at purchase, so the days count from arrival.

Does the Sri Lanka eSIM also work in the Maldives?

No. Neither our Sri Lanka eSIM nor our South Asia eSIM covers the Maldives. The South Asia eSIM covers Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Pakistan. For the Maldives you need a separate eSIM or the Wi-Fi at your resort.

Do I need a Sri Lankan address for a tourist eSIM?

Only for Airalo’s Ella+ plan with minutes and SMS, which asks for a Sri Lankan address by SMS after activation. Airalo’s data-only plans, Holafly and our Sri Lanka and South Asia eSIMs carry no such note on their product pages. As of 30.09.2026.

As of 30 September 2026. All prices were read in euros on that day on povnomad.com, airalo.com and esim.holafly.com and may change at any time.
