Mexico SIM Card for Tourists: Movistar and Telcel Prices, Passport Rule and Rural Coverage

Last updated on 30 October 2026

A local SIM in Mexico costs little: Movistar’s prepaid chip is 60 pesos (about €2.88) with 20 GB for 14 days, and a 200-peso top-up (€9.58) buys 4 GB for 30 days. Since January 2026 a new Mexican line only works after you link it to your passport, and both the operator websites and the linking steps are in Spanish. The POVNOMAD Mexico eSIM starts at €3.90 for 1 GB over 7 days, runs on Movistar or Telcel and asks for no Mexican registration when you buy it. As of 29 October 2026.

On price, the local SIM wins in Mexico, and by a wide margin if you find the Movistar chip. The eSIM earns its place elsewhere: you are online at the gate, you skip the shop and the passport check, and our eSIM can use Telcel, the network with the widest reach outside the cities.

How much does a SIM card cost in Mexico?

Mexico has two big networks of its own, Telcel and AT&T. Movistar moved all its customers onto AT&T’s radio network by 30 June 2022 and returned its spectrum (DPL News, 2022). Of the three, only Movistar showed readable prepaid prices on 29 October 2026. Telcel and AT&T refused our requests (HTTP 403). Archived Telcel pages from September and October 2026 list package levels from 10 to 500 pesos but load the data volumes by script, so we quote no gigabytes for Telcel.

Movistar’s terms say it sells the 60-peso chip only through its “Canal Especialista” sales channel, so not every kiosk will have it, and list the offer as valid from 21 September to 12 November 2026. We found no published price list for SIM sellers at Mexican airports, and resellers set their own prices.

Compare that with travel eSIMs bought before departure, as of 29 October 2026:

Read on 29 October 2026 on povnomad.com, airalo.com/de/mexico-esim (EUR view) and esim.holafly.com/de/esim-mexiko/. Holafly sells unlimited plans only. “–” = no such plan. POVNOMAD Unlimited Smart gives 1 GB at full speed per 24 hours, then unlimited at up to 1 Mbit/s. Airalo also sells Mexico packages with minutes and SMS at higher prices.

From 10 GB upwards Airalo is cheaper than we are, and for a month of unlimited data both Airalo and Holafly cost less. Every duration of the unlimited plans is in our Mexico eSIM provider comparison.

Do you need a passport or a CURP for a Mexican SIM card?

You need your passport. A CURP is the Mexican population register number, and foreigners can use their passport instead. Mexico’s regulator, the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT), published its guidelines for identifying mobile lines on 9 December 2025. Article 20 says foreigners identify themselves with a passport or a temporary CURP for foreigners, and the operator stores only your name, country of origin, passport number, the phone number and the result of the check. Thirty days after the guidelines took effect, operators were allowed to sell only SIMs that stay switched off until someone links them (Diario Oficial de la Federación, 9 December 2025).

This is Mexico’s second attempt. A first register, the PANAUT from 2021, collected biometric data; the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional on 25 April 2022. The new rules apply to every Mexican mobile line, old and new.

What about your travel eSIM? The guidelines leave foreign roaming lines open: the CRT is to define how they are linked once the 2026 World Cup is over (transitional article nine). In May 2026 the CRT wrote on X that visitors roaming on their own foreign line during the World Cup did not need to register, while anyone buying a Mexican chip did (Expansión, 18 May 2026). On 29 October 2026 we found no published rule for roaming lines. We will update this page when the CRT publishes one.

Can you buy a Mexican SIM online without speaking Spanish?

Hardly. Telcel’s and Movistar’s websites are in Spanish only; Movistar points to its Mexican, Venezuelan and Uruguayan sites as language versions, all in Spanish. The activation runs in Spanish too. Movistar lists the steps for a new chip: insert the SIM, wait for the SMS with your new number, call *611, link the line to an official ID, then top up.

Telcel lets foreigners link a line online with a passport or temporary CURP. The process asks for a selfie as a liveness check and gives you three attempts; after that you have to visit a Telcel customer centre (Xataka México, 10 January 2026). Your name has to match your passport exactly. In a shop the staff do the linking for you, which is the easier route if your Spanish is basic.

Which network covers Mexico outside the cities: Telcel, AT&T or Movistar?

Telcel, by the regulator’s own figures. Measured by population, almost every operator reaches most Mexicans with 4G. Measured by land area, the gap opens up: Telcel’s 4G reaches 42.0 percent of Mexico’s territory, AT&T’s 24.6 percent.

Source: IFT, “Quién es quién en cobertura móvil en México”, first quarter of 2025, total coverage (“cobertura diferenciada”) and guaranteed coverage, based on the operators’ own coverage maps. The IFT was the regulator before the CRT. The CRT’s report for the fourth quarter of 2025 gives population figures only.

In Mexico City, Cancún or Monterrey you will rarely notice which network you are on. On long road trips, in the mountains and on smaller islands it matters: no single operator covers even half of the country’s land area with 4G. Even eSIM providers say so: Holafly names Isla Holbox, Chiquilá and parts of the road between Playa del Carmen and Mérida as places without coverage for its Mexico eSIM (esim.holafly.com, 29 October 2026).

The POVNOMAD Mexico eSIM connects to Movistar 5G or Telcel 4G, depending on which is available, according to the product page. Movistar’s signal comes from AT&T’s towers. Outside AT&T’s footprint the eSIM can fall back on Telcel, whose 4G covers a larger area. Airalo names AT&T and Movistar for Mexico, Holafly names Movistar and Telcel. After purchase you see the networks in use in the POVNOMAD app under “Available networks”.

How do you buy the local SIM the right way?

  • Have your passport with you. Without linking, the line does not work.
  • Buy in an operator shop if you can. Telcel and Movistar shops link the line for you, and after three failed online attempts Telcel sends you there anyway.
  • Ask for the Chip Movistar at 60 pesos with 20 GB for 14 days. If the seller asks for more, compare with the price on movistar.com.mx.
  • Write your name exactly as in your passport. Telcel may reject a mismatch.
  • Check that your phone is unlocked. A phone locked to a German network will not accept a Mexican SIM.
  • If you take your German SIM out, you will not receive SMS codes from your bank. A dual-SIM phone keeps both lines active.
  • Top up in the operator’s app or on its website before the validity runs out.

When is the eSIM the better choice, and when is it not?

The local SIM is the better deal for almost everyone who stays a week or longer and can get to a shop. The Movistar chip gives 20 GB for 14 days at €2.88; our 20 GB cost €33.90. A Movistar top-up of 200 pesos buys 4 GB for 30 days at €9.58, our 5 GB cost €11.90. You also get a Mexican number with unlimited national calls.

The eSIM fits better in these cases:

  • You want maps, a taxi app and messages working when you land, without a shop visit, a passport check and a Spanish activation. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi (instructions for iPhone and Android); validity starts on first contact with a Mexican network.
  • You travel beyond the cities. Our eSIM can use Telcel, which covers 42 percent of the country’s land area with 4G; a Movistar chip runs on AT&T’s network with 24.6 percent.
  • Mexico is one stop of several. The North America eSIM covers the USA, Canada and Mexico on one profile, from €3.90 for 1 GB over 7 days.
  • You need 10 GB over a month: our 10 GB for 30 days cost €21.90, Movistar’s 10-GB top-up €23.96 plus the chip.

One honest point: on Telcel our eSIM gets 4G only, not Telcel’s 5G, and Airalo sells 10 GB and more for less than we do. For cash on the ground, see our guide to ATM fees in Mexico. This guide is also available in German and Spanish.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a SIM card cost in Mexico?

The Chip Movistar costs 60 pesos (about €2.88) and includes 20 GB for 14 days. After that, a 200-peso top-up (€9.58) buys 4 GB for 30 days and 500 pesos (€23.96) 10 GB. Telcel sells packages from 10 to 500 pesos. As of 29 October 2026, at €1 = 20.8661 MXN.

Do I need a CURP to buy a SIM card in Mexico?

No. Under the CRT guidelines of 9 December 2025, foreigners link a line with their passport or a temporary CURP for foreigners. The operator stores your name, country of origin and passport number. Without linking, a new SIM stays switched off.

Do I have to register my travel eSIM in Mexico?

Not at the moment, as far as we can find. The guidelines leave foreign roaming lines to a later decision by the CRT after the 2026 World Cup, and on 29 October 2026 we found no published rule. Our product page says the same: the question is not settled.

Which mobile network has the best coverage in Mexico?

Telcel covers the largest area. According to the regulator’s coverage report for the first quarter of 2025, Telcel’s 4G reaches 42.0 percent of the land area and 94.1 percent of the population, AT&T’s 24.6 and 90.1 percent. Movistar has used AT&T’s radio network since June 2022.

Does the POVNOMAD Mexico eSIM use Telcel?

Yes, among others. The product page names Movistar 5G and Telcel 4G and says the eSIM uses whichever is available where you are. Movistar’s signal comes from AT&T’s network. You see the networks in use in the POVNOMAD app after purchase.

Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM in Mexico?

Yes, in most cases. The Movistar chip gives 20 GB for 14 days at €2.88, while 20 GB on the POVNOMAD eSIM cost €33.90. The eSIM costs less only at 10 GB over 30 days: €21.90 against Movistar’s 500-peso top-up at €23.96 plus the chip. As of 29 October 2026.

Can I buy and activate a Mexican SIM without speaking Spanish?

Only with some effort. Telcel’s and Movistar’s websites are in Spanish only, and Movistar’s activation asks you to call *611 and fill in the linking form. Telcel’s online linking needs a selfie and allows three attempts. In a shop the staff do it for you.

How do I know if these prices are still current?

Every price on this page was read on 29 October 2026 on movistar.com.mx, povnomad.com, airalo.com and esim.holafly.com, Telcel from an archived page of 23 September 2026.
