Guatemala SIM Card for Tourists: Claro and Tigo Prices, Passport Rule and Highland Coverage

Last updated on 30 October 2026

A local SIM in Guatemala costs little: Claro sells 7 GB for 7 days at 35 quetzales (about €4.12) and 15 GB for 30 days at 120 quetzales (€14.12), and the shop has to see your passport, because Guatemalan law ties every prepaid line to an ID. The POVNOMAD Guatemala eSIM starts at €5.90 for 1 GB over 7 days and €16.90 for 5 GB over 30 days, runs on Claro and Tigo and needs no ID when you buy it. As of 29 October 2026.

On price, the local SIM wins in Guatemala by a wide margin. The eSIM earns its place elsewhere: you are online when you land, you skip the shop and the passport copy, and if you cross into El Salvador you can add a second country without a second shop visit.

As of 29 October 2026. Claro prices from Claro Guatemala’s package catalogue, SIM price from a Prensa Libre check of 20 July 2026, POVNOMAD prices from the Guatemala product page. Converted at €1 = 8.5009 quetzales (ECB reference rate for the US dollar of 29 October 2026 combined with a market rate of 7.6378 quetzales per dollar on the same day).

How much does a SIM card cost in Guatemala?

Guatemala has two mobile operators, Claro and Tigo. In a check of official shops on 20 July 2026, Prensa Libre found SIM prices between 10 and 25 quetzales: the card itself is usually free, and the money is your first top-up (Prensa Libre, 20 July 2026). After that you buy a data package. Claro’s prices were readable on 29 October 2026. Tigo’s websites refused our requests (HTTP 403), so we quote no Tigo prices.

At 20 GB Airalo is cheaper than we are. Against Claro, every eSIM loses on price: Claro’s 15 GB for 30 days cost €14.12, our 5 GB €16.90.

Do you need a passport to buy a SIM card in Guatemala?

Yes. Since 2013 the sale of prepaid SIMs has been governed by Decree 8-2013, the Ley de Equipos Terminales Móviles. Guatemalans show their DPI identity card, foreigners a valid passport. Sellers have to be registered with the telecoms regulator SIT, and under article 16 an operator may only activate a SIM once all legal requirements are met. Prensa Libre saw street sellers and authorised dealers photograph the buyer’s ID and ask for a signed form (Prensa Libre, 20 July 2026).

A travel eSIM is not sold in Guatemala and needs no Guatemalan registration. It roams on Claro or Tigo like a foreign SIM.

Tigo or Claro: which network keeps you online in the highlands?

Tigo, if coverage is what counts, and Claro, if speed is. Opensignal measured both networks from October to December 2025. Tigo scored 8.6 out of 10 for coverage experience, Claro 7.0. Claro’s users downloaded at 61.3 Mbit/s on average, Tigo’s at 25.3.

NetworkCoverage experience (0 to 10)Download speed experienceUpload speed experience

Claro7.061.3 Mbit/s16.7 Mbit/s

Source: Opensignal, Guatemala Mobile Network Experience Report, February 2026, data from 1 October to 29 December 2025. Coverage experience rates how often users find a signal where they are, not the share of the country’s area.

Neither Claro nor Tigo publishes coverage figures by region that we could read, so we cannot say which network wins in which valley. Holafly says towns and popular sights usually have a reliable signal and lists parts of Tikal National Park, Semuc Champey, the trails up Acatenango volcano and the mountain roads around Lake Atitlán as places where the signal can drop (esim.holafly.com, 29 October 2026). Download offline maps before long bus rides through the mountains.

The POVNOMAD Guatemala eSIM connects to Claro 5G or Tigo 4G, depending on which is available, according to the product page. You get Claro’s speed in the towns and can fall back on Tigo’s wider coverage. Airalo names Tigo 5G and Claro 4G, Holafly names Tigo and Telgua, the company behind Claro. After purchase you see the networks in use in the POVNOMAD app under “Available networks”.

What happens to your SIM when you cross into El Salvador?

Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua belong to the CA-4 agreement of 2006, so the land border is a passport check. Your phone, though, moves into a new country, and each SIM handles that differently.

  • Claro SIM from Guatemala: Claro’s prepaid roaming page says its Todo Incluido packs keep working in El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama at your local rate. Turn on data roaming and restart the phone after the border (Claro Guatemala, Roaming Prepago).
  • Tigo SIM from Guatemala: Tigo also runs a network in El Salvador. Whether Tigo prepaid packs work there we could not check, because Tigo’s websites blocked our requests.
  • POVNOMAD Guatemala eSIM: it covers Guatemala only. Add the El Salvador eSIM (from €4.90 for 1 GB) as a second profile, or take one Latin America eSIM for 17 countries including both, 5 GB for 30 days at €29.90.

Prices and rules on the other side of the border are in our El Salvador SIM card guide. Coming from Mexico? Our Mexico SIM card guide covers Telcel, Movistar and the passport rule there.

How do you buy the local SIM the right way?

  • Take your passport. Without it no seller may activate the line.
  • Buy in a Claro or Tigo shop if you can. The staff register the line, and the card itself is usually free; you pay only the first top-up of 10 to 25 quetzales.
  • Expect the seller to photograph your passport and ask you to sign a form. Prensa Libre describes this as normal practice.
  • Choose a Claro pack with Central America data if El Salvador or Honduras is next.
  • Check that your phone is unlocked. A phone locked to a German network will not accept a Guatemalan SIM.
  • If you take your German SIM out, you will not receive SMS codes from your bank. A dual-SIM phone keeps both lines active.

When is the eSIM the better choice, and when is it not?

The local SIM is the better deal for anyone who stays a week or longer and reaches a shop. Claro gives you 15 GB for 30 days at €14.12; our 5 GB for 30 days cost €16.90. You also get a Guatemalan number for calls.

The eSIM fits better in these cases:

  • You want maps, a ride app and messages working when you land, without a shop visit and a passport copy. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi (instructions for iPhone and Android); validity starts on first contact with a Guatemalan network.
  • You want unlimited data for a week: our Unlimited Smart costs €22.90 for 7 days, Airalo’s unlimited week €36.00 and Holafly’s €37.90.
  • You do not want to hand a copy of your passport to a street seller.
  • Guatemala is one stop of several. The Latin America eSIM covers 17 countries on one profile.

One honest point: Claro’s own Central America packs make the local SIM the cheaper option for a Guatemala and El Salvador trip as well, and Airalo sells 20 GB for less than we do. This guide is also available in German.
