Border roaming at the Swiss border means your phone connects to a Swiss network while you are still on the German or French side, because Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt transmit a stronger signal there than your home network. Switzerland is outside EU roaming. With a German contract, a day on a Swiss network costs €7.99 with Vodafone (EasyTravel Day), €2.99 or €4.99 with o2 depending on the contract, and nothing on current Telekom MagentaMobil plans. As of 30 September 2026.
If you stay on the German side, you need no eSIM, just manual network selection (steps below). If you cross the border, our Switzerland eSIM costs €2.90 for 1 GB over seven days, and Unlimited Smart €4.90 for three days. The Europe eSIM for more than 30 countries covers Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein and France on one line, from €2.90 for 1 GB over seven days.
Why does your phone show a Swiss network when you are in Germany?
A smartphone picks the strongest network its SIM is allowed to use. teltarif.de names Lake Constance, the High Rhine and the area around Basel as places where that can be a Swiss network while you are still in Germany. Your German SIM may roam there, so it registers, and your operator bills you as if you were in Switzerland. Sitting in a café in Konstanz makes no difference to the bill.
| Place | Where you are | Networks your phone can pick | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basel, Weil am Rhein, Lörrach | Germany, Switzerland and France within a few kilometres | German, Swiss, French | French networks fall under EU roaming, Swiss ones do not. |
| Basel Badischer Bahnhof | Swiss territory, station run by Deutsche Bahn | Swiss | Even when you only change trains, you are in Switzerland. |
| EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg | France | only French on the airport grounds | Swisscom and Sunrise had to switch off their equipment there on 24 May 2016. |
| Konstanz and Kreuzlingen | Germany and Switzerland, grown into one town | German, Swiss | The border runs between houses and streets. |
| Lake Constance (Obersee) | water with no agreed state border | German, Swiss, Austrian | Austrian networks fall under EU roaming. |
| High Rhine | Germany, with the Rhine as the border | German, Swiss | teltarif.de names the High Rhine as a typical border trap. |
| Büsingen near Schaffhausen | German municipality entirely surrounded by Switzerland | signals from neighbouring towns | No German and no Swiss operator serves the village directly. |
| Lake Geneva, south shore (Évian, Thonon) | France | French, Swiss | 40% of the lake belongs to France, the north shore to Switzerland. |

People who live or work here deal with this every day. At the end of March 2026, about 413,000 cross-border commuters worked in Switzerland, 16.3% of them living in Germany, which is about 67,000 people (Swiss Federal Statistical Office, cross-border commuter statistics for Q1 2026). Lake Constance adds day visitors: of its 273 kilometres of shoreline, 173 belong to Germany, 72 to Switzerland and 28 to Austria.

With Vodafone and o2, a brief contact is enough. Vodafone charges EasyTravel Day as soon as you call, text or use data on a Swiss network; according to the InfoDok, even opening the MeinVodafone app while roaming counts. Most Vodafone plans have EasyTravel preset. o2 says its day pass switches on automatically when you register on a Swiss network. If your phone slips onto a Swiss network in Konstanz on 20 working days a month, EasyTravel Day adds up to €159.80.
At Telekom, the inclusive rule applies to MagentaMobil plans sold since 1 August 2024, with a limit of 1,000 minutes and 1,000 texts a month in Switzerland (teltarif.de). For older MagentaMobil generations, the price list uses a different country group 1 that puts Switzerland next to the USA and Canada, so check your contract. How do you stop your phone from switching to a Swiss network?
- iPhone: Settings > Mobile Service (or Cellular) > tap your line > Network Selection. Turn off “Automatic” and pick your German network. Labels vary slightly by iOS version.
- Android, for example Samsung: Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network operators. Turn off “Select automatically” and pick your German network.
- Turn off data roaming for the German SIM; on an iPhone it sits under Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data Options > Data Roaming. This stops data only. A call or text on a Swiss network still triggers EasyTravel Day with Vodafone.
- Switch back to automatic before you cross the border. With a fixed German network, your phone finds no service in Switzerland.
Manual selection protects you best, but it costs coverage: where your German network is weak, you have none at all. Watch for your operator’s roaming text as well. If it arrives although you never crossed the border, your phone has switched.
A travel eSIM starts its validity at the first contact with the partner network, as our product page states. Near the border, that contact can happen while you are still in Germany. Install the Switzerland eSIM at home, but switch the line on only when you set off. The eSIM line needs data roaming; the German line stays without it.
Commuting, a day trip, a boat tour on Lake Constance: what fits?
| Situation | With Telekom | With Vodafone or o2 | With an eSIM |
|---|---|---|---|
| You live in Konstanz or Lörrach and stay in Germany | nothing needed | select the network manually | none needed |
| Day trip to Basel, Zurich or Schaffhausen | €0 | €7.99 (Vodafone) or €2.99 to €4.99 (o2) | Switzerland eSIM, 1 GB over 7 days: €2.90 |
| Commuting 20 days a month | €0 | EasyTravel Flat €6.99 or Roaming Plus 24M €4.99 a month | Switzerland eSIM, 50 GB over 180 days: €31.90 (about €5.32 a month) |
| Boat tour on Lake Constance through three countries | €0 | day rate as soon as a Swiss network takes over | Europe eSIM, 1 GB over 7 days: €2.90 |
| Ski trip to France with a flight to Geneva | €0 | day rate for each day in Switzerland | Europe eSIM, 5 GB over 30 days: €8.90 |

For commuters with Vodafone or o2, the monthly options are cheap and keep your number in the same package. They tie you in for 12 or 24 months, though. The eSIM pays off for day trips, for contracts without a Switzerland option, for a tablet or second phone, and for anyone who wants no minimum term. The Europe eSIM fits when you touch several countries in one day: on Lake Constance, German, Swiss and Austrian networks take turns, and between Geneva and Chamonix, Swiss and French ones do.
How do Switzerland eSIMs compare?
| Plan | POVNOMAD | Airalo | Holafly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smallest plan | 1 GB, 7 days: €2.90 | from €4.00 | unlimited plans only |
| 5 GB, 30 days | €6.90 | €13.00 | – |
| 10 GB, 30 days | €10.90 | €21.00 | – |
| Unlimited, 7 days | €10.90 (Smart, 1 GB high speed a day) or €16.90 (XL, 3 GB a day) | €23.00 | €25.50 |
| Unlimited, 30 days | €30.90 (Smart) or €66.90 (XL) | €61.50 | €68.90 |
| Longest validity | 180 days (50 GB, €31.90) | 30 days | 90 days |
Prices read on 30 September 2026 on povnomad.com, airalo.com and esim.holafly.com (Switzerland pages, EUR). “From €4.00” is the entry price in Airalo’s page title. Airalo names Sunrise as its network, Holafly lists Salt, Sunrise and Swisscom. Prices are subject to change.
On data packages, our Switzerland eSIM comes out ahead on the reference date. For 30 days with 3 GB of high-speed data a day, Airalo at €61.50 costs less than our Unlimited XL at €66.90, so a month of heavy streaming is cheaper there. For commuters and second homes, validity matters more: neither of the other two sells 50 GB over 180 days on the reference date.
You may know the same border problem from the Adriatic. Border roaming in the Balkans shows where phones slip onto non-EU networks near Dubrovnik, Neum and Kotor.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my phone show a Swiss network when I am in Germany?
Your phone picks the strongest network it may use. On Lake Constance, along the High Rhine and around Basel, that is often a Swiss network from Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt, even on the German side. Your operator then bills you as if you were in Switzerland. Set network selection to manual and pick your German network while you stay in Germany.
What does it cost if my phone joins a Swiss network in Konstanz?
With Vodafone, €7.99 for the calendar day (EasyTravel Day) as soon as you call, text or use data. With o2, €2.99 for 300 MB or €4.99 for 500 MB a day, depending on the contract. On Telekom MagentaMobil plans sold since 1 August 2024, it costs nothing extra. As of 30 September 2026.
How do I block Swiss networks on an iPhone?
Under Settings, Mobile Service, your line, Network Selection, turn off “Automatic” and pick your German network. The iPhone then stops registering on Swiss networks. Before you cross the border, switch back to automatic, or you will have no service in Switzerland.
Is turning off data roaming enough?
For mobile data, yes. Calls and texts still run on the Swiss network, and with Vodafone a single call or text triggers EasyTravel Day at €7.99. To be sure, select your German network manually.
Does EU roaming apply at EuroAirport Basel?
Yes, as long as your phone uses a French network. EuroAirport sits on French territory, and Swisscom and Sunrise had to switch off their transmitters on the airport grounds on 24 May 2016 because only French operators may transmit there. In Basel itself, your phone uses Swiss networks.
Which eSIM suits commuters between Germany and Switzerland?
The Switzerland eSIM with 50 GB over 180 days for €31.90, about €5.32 a month, with no contract term. Vodafone offers EasyTravel Flat at €6.99 a month on a 12-month term, o2 offers Roaming Plus 24M at €4.99 a month for 3 GB on a 24-month term. Telekom customers on a current MagentaMobil plan need nothing. As of 30 September 2026.
Can my phone join a Swiss network on Lake Geneva?
Yes. On the French south shore near Évian and Thonon, Switzerland lies across the water, and 40% of the lake belongs to France. Check the network name on your display and pick a French network by hand if needed. For Geneva and its French suburbs, the Europe eSIM covers both countries on one line.
