Safari in Kenya and Tanzania with Zanzibar: Which eSIM, and How Is the Signal?

Last updated on 30 September 2026

For a safari in Kenya and Tanzania you need two country eSIMs or one regional eSIM that covers both countries. Two weeks, seven days in each country, cost €41.80 at POVNOMAD: Unlimited Smart for Kenya (7 days, €22.90) plus 5 GB for Tanzania including Zanzibar (30 days, €18.90). Prices as of 30 September 2026.

If 5 GB or 10 GB is enough for the whole trip, Airalo’s Africa Safari eSIM costs less than anything we sell for this route: 5 GB for 15 days in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda costs €17.00 there, 10 GB €29.00. With 3 GB per country you pay €25.80 with us. We have no unlimited plan for Tanzania yet. For unlimited data in both countries, two Holafly eSIMs cost €67.80 for two weeks.

Which eSIMs cover Kenya and Tanzania?

A country eSIM works in one country only. Zanzibar belongs to Tanzania, and our product page lists beach days on Zanzibar among the uses of the Tanzania eSIM. As of 30 September 2026:

Country lists and networks read on 30.09.2026 on povnomad.com, airalo.com and esim.holafly.com. Holafly’s Africa page lists 28 countries, while the FAQ on the same page says 29. Our Africa eSIM for 21 countries, on sale since 21 September 2026, includes Kenya and Tanzania but not South Africa.

On safari, the network matters more than in town. Safaricom held 69.8% of Kenya’s mobile subscriptions at the end of June 2026, according to the Communications Authority of Kenya. In Tanzania, Vodacom led with 33.0%, ahead of Yas (formerly Tigo) with 28.6%, Airtel with 20.5% and Halotel with 16.4%, according to TCRA figures for June 2026 reported by TanzaniaInvest.

What does a two-week safari with Zanzibar cost?

Seven days in Kenya, seven days in Tanzania or on Zanzibar, prices from 30 September 2026:

All prices collected on the providers’ websites on 30.09.2026 and subject to change. Unlimited means different things: our Unlimited Smart gives you 1 GB of high-speed data every 24 hours, then up to 1 Mbit/s. Airalo slows its unlimited plans to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. Holafly names no threshold and says any throttling lasts one day at most; on its Kenya and Africa pages, Holafly limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB a day.

With unlimited data in Kenya and a fixed allowance for Tanzania, we are the cheapest option at €41.80. Holafly charges €33.90 for the Kenya week alone. Airalo sells no unlimited plan for Kenya on its own, and its Africa Safari eSIM costs €41.00 for seven days of unlimited data.

If one eSIM with a fixed allowance will do, Airalo Africa Safari wins: €17.00 for 5 GB or €29.00 for 10 GB over 15 days. Our Africa eSIM for 29 countries costs €29.90 for 5 GB. Unlimited data in both countries costs the least with two Holafly eSIMs at €67.80. Because our Tanzania eSIM has fixed data only, our cheapest unlimited option for Tanzania runs through the Africa eSIM for 21 countries, at €53.90 for seven days. Our unlimited eSIM page explains the tiers, and our Travel eSIM Price Study 2026 compares the fair use rules of the big providers.

How good is the signal in the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro?

Mobile networks in East Africa reach most people but not most of the land. In Tanzania, 4G covered 94.39% of the population in June 2026 but only 77.53% of the land area, according to the TCRA figures. National parks have few inhabitants, so population coverage tells you little about signal on a game drive.

In the Masai Mara, Safaricom’s signal is reasonable around lodges, camps and gateway towns such as Narok and Sekenani, and patchy to non-existent in many parts of the reserve, the Kenyan safari operator Adyeri Travel wrote in May 2026. The same guide says Airtel covers many of the same areas and sometimes has signal where Safaricom does not. Our Kenya eSIM names Airtel as its example network.

Tanzanian safari operators rate the networks differently. Kiliserengoro Tours expects very limited coverage on the central Serengeti plains and points to satellite Wi-Fi at the lodges. Gnade Safaris recommends Yas for the Serengeti and Zanzibar and Vodacom for Arusha and the Kilimanjaro region.

On Kilimanjaro, state-owned TTCL switched on high-speed internet at Horombo Hut, 3,720 metres above sea level, in August 2022, Xinhua reported. None of the eSIMs in this comparison names TTCL as a partner network.

Most mid-range and luxury camps in the Masai Mara offer Wi-Fi, usually over satellite. According to Adyeri Travel, it works for messages and email but struggles with video calls. Before you leave, download offline maps of the parks in Google Maps and ask your lodge which network works on site.

How do you switch eSIMs at the Namanga border?

Namanga is the road crossing between Nairobi and Arusha. The presidents of Kenya and Tanzania opened it as a one-stop border post on 1 December 2018, according to the East African Community. According to our product pages, the validity of our eSIMs starts on first contact with the partner network in the destination country, not at purchase. You can install both eSIMs at home.

  1. At home, on Wi-Fi: install the Kenya and Tanzania eSIMs (instructions for iPhone and Android). Switch both lines off until you arrive.
  2. In Kenya: turn on the Kenya eSIM, set it as your mobile data line and enable data roaming for it. Turn data roaming off on your home SIM.
  3. At Namanga, or on landing in Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar: turn on the Tanzania eSIM, make it your data line, enable data roaming and switch the Kenya eSIM off.

Your home number stays reachable for calls and texts, for example for your bank’s verification codes. Your provider bills calls and texts at its roaming rates; our eSIMs carry data only.

Does the eSIM work on Zanzibar?

Yes, our Tanzania eSIM covers Zanzibar, since the island belongs to Tanzania. Two entry rules matter for your first hour after landing. Since October 2024, every visitor to Zanzibar has had to buy entry insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, currently USD 44 per person. From 1 October 2026, mainland Tanzania requires its own entry insurance of about USD 44 from the National Insurance Corporation, which you can also buy on arrival. If you plan to buy it at the airport, install your eSIM before you fly so you have data straight away.

What happens during an internet shutdown in Tanzania?

After the elections in October 2025, the internet in Tanzania was shut down completely for several days. An eSIM connects through the same local networks as a local SIM card. Nobody can promise that it keeps working during a government shutdown, so save tickets, lodge contacts and maps offline.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one eSIM for Kenya and Tanzania?

Yes. Airalo Africa Safari covers Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda: 10 GB for 15 days costs €29.00, unlimited data for seven days €41.00. Holafly Africa costs €75.50 for 15 days of unlimited data. Our Africa eSIM costs €29.90 for 5 GB (29 countries) or €53.90 for seven days of Unlimited Smart (21 countries). As of 30.09.2026.

Which eSIM is cheapest for a safari in Kenya only?

With unlimited data, POVNOMAD Unlimited Smart costs €22.90 for seven days and €30.90 for ten. Holafly charges €33.90 for seven days, and Airalo has no unlimited plan for Kenya alone. For 5 GB, Airalo Africa Safari is cheapest at €15.50 over seven days; 5 GB costs €19.90 with us (30 days) and €28.00 with Airalo Kenya. 3 GB costs €12.90 with us (15 days) and €18.00 with Airalo Kenya (7 days). As of 30.09.2026.

Which eSIM should I take for Tanzania and Zanzibar?

Our Tanzania eSIM covers Zanzibar and has fixed data only: 5 GB for €18.90 or 10 GB for €33.90, each valid for 30 days. Airalo Tanzania is cheaper, with 5 GB for €14.00 and 10 GB for €23.50, and sells seven days of unlimited data for €32.50. Holafly charges €33.90 for seven days of unlimited data. As of 30.09.2026.

Is there mobile signal in the Serengeti and the Masai Mara?

Around lodges, camps and park gates there usually is, on the open plains often not. Safari operators describe Safaricom and Airtel signal in the Masai Mara as patchy inside the reserve and very limited coverage on the central Serengeti plains. Download offline maps before your game drives and use the lodge Wi-Fi for uploads.

How do I switch eSIMs at the Namanga border?

Install both eSIMs at home, because validity only starts on first contact with the network in the destination country. At Namanga, turn on the Tanzania eSIM, make it your mobile data line and enable data roaming for it. Then switch the Kenya eSIM off. Your home number stays reachable for calls and texts.

Will my eSIM work if Tanzania shuts down the internet?

Nobody can promise that. An eSIM runs over the same local mobile networks as a Tanzanian SIM card. After the October 2025 elections the internet was completely down for several days. Keep tickets, contacts and maps offline.

Can I use M-Pesa with a travel eSIM?

Not with a data eSIM. M-Pesa runs on a registered Safaricom SIM with a Kenyan number. You can buy one at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi with your passport, and registration takes ten to fifteen minutes, according to Adyeri Travel. Our eSIMs come without a phone number.

As of 30 September 2026. All prices were read in euros on that day on the povnomad.com product pages, on airalo.com and on esim.holafly.com and may change at any time.
