A travel eSIM gives you mobile data in Lima, Cusco and Aguas Calientes below Machu Picchu, while on most of the classic four-day Inca Trail no network reaches you, according to tour operators. The POVNOMAD Peru eSIM roams on Claro according to its product page and costs €20.90 for seven days of unlimited data (1 GB at full speed per day). Airalo charges €24.50 (3 GB, Movistar network), Holafly €30.50. Prices as of 30 September 2026.
Because a travel eSIM roams, you don’t have to put your phone on Peru’s IMEI whitelist, which the operator Movistar requires only for phones used with a Peruvian line. If you need more than 1 GB a day or stay for a month, Airalo costs less than we do on the survey date.

All prices collected on povnomad.com, airalo.com and esim.holafly.com on 30.09.2026. Offers may change. The full-speed allowance renews every 24 hours. Holafly says fair use throttling by the network lasts one day at most and limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB a day. None of the three plans includes a Peruvian phone number.
Our Smart plan is the cheapest at every duration: €27.90 for 10 days against €30.50 at Airalo. At 15 days we are just below Airalo at €37.90 against €40.00, while Airalo gives you three times the full-speed data. For 30 days you pay €69.90 with us, €71.50 at Airalo and €74.50 at Holafly. Our L plan is dearer than Airalo in every column. With fixed data over 30 days we are cheaper: 10 GB cost €21.90 with us against €23.50 at Airalo, 20 GB €36.90 against €37.00. For a trip with daily video uploads, Airalo is the better choice on the survey date.
If Bolivia is on your route, our Latin America eSIM covers Peru, Bolivia and 15 more countries with fixed data, 5 GB for 30 days at €29.90. The South America eSIM for Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Uruguay leaves Bolivia out; its Unlimited Smart starts at €26.90 for 7 days.
Claro, Movistar or Bitel: which network reaches the Andes?
Peru’s telecom regulator OSIPTEL publishes where each operator guarantees 4G coverage. For the first half of 2025, the operators declared guaranteed 4G coverage in these shares of populated areas: Bitel 81.69 percent, Movistar 66.99 percent, Claro 20.91 percent and Entel 3.02 percent (OSIPTEL, 24 December 2025). The figure counts only areas where an operator commits to OSIPTEL’s quality standards, not every place with a signal.
Our product page names Claro 4G/5G as the partner network, marked as variable. Airalo runs on Movistar, Holafly names Movistar and Claro. On OSIPTEL’s figures, Claro commits to guaranteed coverage in fewer places than Movistar. Check your route on OSIPTEL’s map Checa tu señal before you book: pick the district, for example Machupicchu or Puno, and compare the operators. Your personal eSIM link lists the partner networks of your eSIM under “Networks”, and you can select a network by hand under Settings > Mobile network > Network operators.
Is there signal at Machu Picchu and on the Inca Trail?
In Aguas Calientes you have normal mobile data and Wi-Fi in hotels and restaurants. On most of the classic four-day Inca Trail you don’t. The tour operator Incredible Peru Tours describes the route section by section:
| Section | Mobile signal |
|---|---|
| Start at Km 82 | signal, because the railway runs close by |
| Day 1 through the Urubamba valley | weak and intermittent |
| Wayllabamba campsite | very weak or none, depending on the network |
| Day 2, Dead Woman’s Pass (Warmiwañusca) to Pacaymayo | practically none |
| Near Wiñay Wayna | partly back |
| Aguas Calientes | normal mobile data, Wi-Fi in hotels and restaurants |
Source: Incredible Peru Tours, “Is there cell service or internet on the Inca Trail?”, 19.04.2026. Signal depends on your network and can change.
Buy your Machu Picchu tickets on Tu Boleto, the official sales site of Peru’s Ministry of Culture, and save them offline together with your train tickets.
Cusco, Lake Titicaca and the Amazon: where does signal get thin?
Cusco lies at 3,500 metres, Puno on Lake Titicaca at 3,800 metres and Arequipa at 2,400 metres. The eSIM itself works the same at altitude. What changes is the distance to the next mast, so check villages and islands around Lake Titicaca and the Colca Canyon on OSIPTEL’s map before you go.
In the rainforest around Puerto Maldonado, lodges replace mobile data with Wi-Fi. Rainforest Expeditions writes that its lodges have no telephone, that a mobile signal for emergencies exists only at Posada Amazonas and Refugio Amazonas, and that it runs Starlink Wi-Fi in its buses, boats and lodges. In the rainy season from December to March, landslides can block roads in the highlands.
Will Peru block your phone? The IMEI whitelist
Not with a travel eSIM. Peru lets phones used with a Peruvian SIM work on its networks without restrictions only if their IMEI is on the national whitelist RENTESEG. The operator Movistar answers the question for visitors: if you use your phone with a foreign chip on roaming, you don’t need to register it. Registration is mandatory only if you use a Peruvian line. A travel eSIM is a foreign profile roaming on Claro or Movistar.
If you buy a Peruvian SIM instead, the operator has to register your phone brought from abroad. If that fails, OSIPTEL says you get an SMS and have at most two business days to fix it before the phone is blocked on Peruvian networks (23 February 2026).
How do you set up the eSIM before the flight to Lima?
- At home on Wi-Fi: install the eSIM (instructions for iPhone and Android) and leave the line switched off. According to our product page, the validity starts with the first connection to the partner network in Peru, and you have 120 days after buying to activate it.
- After landing in Lima: switch the eSIM on, set it as your mobile data line and enable data roaming for it.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM and leave the home SIM on for calls and SMS codes. Our eSIM carries data only.
Our data check estimates how much data your route needs, and the unlimited eSIM page explains the Smart and L tiers. Prices across 95 countries are in our Travel eSIM Price Study 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Is there mobile signal at Machu Picchu and on the Inca Trail?
In Aguas Calientes, the town below the ruins, tour operators report normal mobile data and Wi-Fi in hotels. Save your Machu Picchu and train tickets offline before you set off.
Do I have to register my phone’s IMEI in Peru with a travel eSIM?
No. Movistar Peru states that visitors using their phone with a foreign chip on roaming don’t need to register it in the RENTESEG whitelist. Only phones used with a Peruvian line must be registered. If a registration is missing, OSIPTEL announces a block after an SMS warning and at most two business days. As of 30.09.2026.
