Philippines eSIM for Island Hopping: Signal on Palawan, Siargao and Cebu 2026

Last updated on 30 September 2026

Yes, a travel eSIM works for island hopping on Palawan, Cebu, Bohol and Siargao, and you skip the registration that Philippine SIM cards need. The POVNOMAD Philippines eSIM roams on Globe and Smart according to its product page and costs €10.90 for seven days of unlimited data (1 GB at full speed per day). Airalo charges €24.50 (3 GB, Smart network), Holafly €25.50 (Globe). Prices as of 30 September 2026.

Between the islands, the network sets the limit, not the eSIM. Phones have limited or no reception on some islands. In the typhoon season from June to December, storms can take masts down for days: three days after Typhoon Odette in December 2021, PLDT, the parent company of Smart, still listed Siargao among its areas with sites down.

Which eSIM and which network for island hopping?

All three providers sell data-only eSIMs that roam on Philippine networks. As of 30 September 2026:

All prices collected on povnomad.com, airalo.com and esim.holafly.com on 30.09.2026. Offers may change. The full-speed allowance renews every 24 hours. Holafly says fair use throttling by the network lasts one day at most and limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB a day. None of the three plans includes a Philippine phone number.

For one or two weeks with maps, messengers and social media, our Smart plan is the cheapest in this table. At €10.90 a week it sits €1 above the €9.90 median of our Travel eSIM Price Study 2026 (95 countries, as of 5 September 2026). If you upload videos from every beach, compare the 3 GB plans: for 15 days Airalo costs €43.50 against €44.90 for our XL, for 30 days €64.50 against €85.90. There Airalo is the cheaper choice on the survey date. With fixed data over 30 days we are cheaper: 10 GB cost €15.90 with us (Airalo €17.50), 20 GB €25.90 (Airalo €27.50).

If Thailand or Vietnam comes before or after the Philippines, our Southeast Asia eSIM covers eight countries with one profile, Unlimited Smart from €15.90 for 7 days. Its product page names Globe as the Philippine partner.

Globe or Smart: which network reaches the islands?

Opensignal measured the three Philippine operators from 1 April to 29 June 2026. Globe won the Coverage Experience award for the fifth time in a row, with 7.4 of 10 points. DITO delivered the fastest downloads at 43.1 Mbit/s, ahead of Smart at 38.9 and Globe at 27.1 Mbit/s. None of the three travel eSIMs in this comparison names DITO as a partner.

Our product page lists Globe 5G and Smart 5G as partner networks, marked as variable. Your personal eSIM link shows the networks your eSIM can use under “Networks”. If one network is weak on an island, select the other by hand under Settings > Mobile network > Network operators. Airalo writes that its plan on the Smart network covers the main islands, including Cebu, Bohol, Palawan and Boracay.

Do you have signal on Palawan, Siargao, Cebu and Bohol?

In the towns you arrive in, you can expect the same networks as locals. Out on the water and on small islands, plan without them. No provider guarantees signal on a lagoon tour off El Nido or a sandbar off Siargao, so download maps, ferry tickets and hotel bookings before you leave the main island.

Network notes for the islands on typical routes:

Island or regionSignal notes
Cebu, BoholAiralo names both among the main islands its plan on the Smart network covers
Palawan (El Nido, Coron)Airalo names Palawan among the main islands covered; after Typhoon Odette in 2021 most areas still awaited network repairs three days later
Siargaoamong PLDT’s main outage areas three days after Typhoon Odette in 2021

Do you have to register a travel eSIM in the Philippines?

No. The SIM Registration Act (Republic Act 11934, approved on 10 October 2022) obliges end users to register their SIM with a Philippine telecom operator before activation, and it counts eSIMs as SIMs. Tourists register with their passport, a Philippine address and a return or onward ticket. Their SIM switches off after 30 days unless they show an approved visa extension.

A travel eSIM bought abroad doesn’t come from Globe, Smart or DITO. It roams on their networks. Our product page lists no identity check, and Airalo’s plan data for the Philippines shows none either (30 September 2026). When the Department of Information and Communications Technology said in October 2022 that roaming users fall under the law, it meant Philippine SIMs used abroad.

The 30 days matter for longer trips. German tourists get a free 30-day visa on arrival. Our Smart plan runs up to 30 days for €35.90, and you can top it up on the same eSIM if you extend your stay.

What happens to mobile data during a typhoon?

On average 20 typhoons cross the Philippines every year, most of them in the rainy season from June to December, and infrastructure regularly suffers heavy damage. When power fails and masts fall, no SIM or eSIM helps. Typhoon Odette hit Siargao on 16 December 2021. Three days later PLDT, the parent company of Smart, reported that most of its remaining down sites in Mindanao lay in Surigao del Norte, including Siargao, and that most areas of Palawan still awaited restoration (GMA News, 19 December 2021).

If you travel between June and December, save offline maps, booking confirmations and your airline’s contact details, and follow the typhoon warnings of the Philippine weather service PAGASA.

What should you set up before the flight?

  1. Register in the Philippine entry portal eTravel. Airlines often ask for its QR code at check-in.
  2. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi (instructions for iPhone and Android) and leave the line switched off. The validity starts with the first connection to the partner network in the Philippines, and you have 120 days after buying to activate it.
  3. After landing in Manila or Cebu: switch the eSIM on, set it as your mobile data line and enable data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.

Keep your home SIM active for bank codes by SMS. Calls and texts on it cost whatever your provider charges for the Philippines. Our data check estimates how much data your island route needs, and the unlimited eSIM page explains the Smart, L and XL tiers.

Frequently asked questions

Does a travel eSIM work on Palawan and Siargao?

Yes, where Globe or Smart have a mast. Our eSIM roams on both networks according to the product page, and Airalo writes that its Smart-based plan covers the main islands, including Palawan. Reception is limited or missing on some islands, so download maps before boat tours. Seven days of unlimited data cost €10.90 with us. As of 30.09.2026.

Do tourists have to register an eSIM in the Philippines?

Only for a Philippine SIM or eSIM. The SIM Registration Act of 2022 obliges end users to register with a Philippine operator before activation; tourist SIMs need a passport, a local address and a return ticket and switch off after 30 days. A travel eSIM bought abroad roams on Philippine networks, and neither our product page nor Airalo’s plan data lists an identity check.

Globe or Smart: which network is better for travellers?

It depends on the island. In Opensignal’s report for April to June 2026, Globe won Coverage Experience with 7.4 of 10 points, while Smart downloaded faster at 38.9 Mbit/s against Globe’s 27.1 Mbit/s. Our product page names both as partner networks. If one is weak, choose the other by hand in your network settings.

Does my eSIM work during a typhoon?

Only while the masts stand and have power. After Typhoon Odette hit Siargao on 16 December 2021, PLDT still listed Surigao del Norte, including Siargao, among its main down areas three days later. Around 20 typhoons cross the Philippines each year, mostly from June to December. Save offline maps and bookings before you travel in that season.

How much is an eSIM for 30 days in the Philippines?

€35.90 at POVNOMAD for 30 days with 1 GB at full speed per day, then up to 1 Mbit/s. Airalo charges €64.50 and Holafly €68.90 for 30 days of unlimited data; Airalo includes 3 GB at full speed per day. For 3 GB a day with us, Unlimited XL costs €85.90. As of 30.09.2026.

Will I get a Philippine phone number with a travel eSIM?

No. POVNOMAD, Airalo and Holafly sell data-only eSIMs for the Philippines. WhatsApp and other app calls run over the eSIM’s data. For SMS codes, keep your home SIM switched on. A Philippine number needs a local SIM registered under the SIM Registration Act, valid for 30 days for tourists.

As of 30 September 2026. Prices read in euros on that day on the povnomad.com product pages, airalo.com and esim.holafly.com. Offers can change at any time.
