Is an eSIM or a pocket WiFi cheaper in Japan?
That depends on how many people share one connection. A router costs the same for one traveller as for four, while every extra person needs an extra eSIM.
| Option | 1 person, 7 days | 2 people, 14 days | 4 people, 14 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| POVNOMAD Unlimited Smart (1 GB a day each) | €10.90 | €39.80 | €79.60 |
| POVNOMAD Unlimited L (2 GB a day each) | €15.90 | €65.80 | €131.60 |
| Airalo Unlimited (3 GB a day each) | €24.00 | €87.00 | €174.00 |
| Holafly (unlimited, 1 GB hotspot a day) | €25.50 | €93.80 | €187.60 |
| Pocket WiFi eConnect Japan (one router) | €56.82 | €65.45 | €65.45 |
| Pocket WiFi Japan Wireless (one router) | €55.80 | €76.32 | €76.32 |
All prices as of 29 September 2026, collected from povnomad.com, airalo.com, esim.holafly.com, japan-wireless.com and econnectjapan.com. For 14 days the eSIM rows use the 15-day price, the next tier on the product pages, times the number of people. Router prices include delivery or airport pickup fee and Japanese consumption tax. Yen converted at the ECB reference rate of 28 September 2026 (€1 = ¥178.50). Bold: cheapest option per column.
Alone or as a couple, the eSIM wins clearly. One week alone costs €10.90 on Unlimited Smart against at least €55.80 for a router. A couple on a two-week rail-pass loop pays €39.80 for two Smart eSIMs.
With four people the order flips. Four Smart eSIMs cost €79.60, one eConnect router €65.45. For a family with two phones and two tablets, the router is the cheaper choice.
Can one eSIM hotspot cover two or four people?
Two people, often. Four, rarely. Every POVNOMAD eSIM allows hotspot, and all connected devices draw on the same daily allowance: 1 GB at full speed on Unlimited Smart, 2 GB on Unlimited L, then a steady 1 Mbit/s for everyone together until the 24 hours reset. The Japan product page names no separate hotspot limit. Airalo gives 3 GB at full speed per day in Japan, Holafly lets you share 1 GB per day. The two rental companies advertise no daily cap, but their terms let the network operator slow down very heavy use.
Run the numbers with the data calculator on our product pages. It counts about 0.05 GB a day for maps, 0.3 GB for social media and 1.5 GB for streaming, per person. Two parents with maps and social media plus two children streaming on tablets in the evening come to 3.7 GB a day. That is more than three times the 1 GB of Unlimited Smart and almost twice the 2 GB of L, and even Airalo’s 3 GB fall short. A router carries that day.
Two adults with maps and social media land at 0.7 GB a day, which one eSIM shared by hotspot can carry as long as you stay together. The data check works out your own usage per day.
How do pickup, return and deposit work for a pocket WiFi?
You book the router online, collect it in Japan and send it back by post. The details differ between the two rental companies we checked.

Japan Wireless: price calculator on japan-wireless.com/en/rates for 16 to 22 and 16 to 29 November 2026 with pickup at Narita Terminal 1 (an October week cost the same), FAQ and terms. The rates page lists the loss fee as ¥40,000 before tax. eConnect Japan: price formula of the Unlimited Plan page (¥8,250 for two days, ¥220 for each further day), shipping fee of ¥720 plus tax from the FAQ, pickup page and terms. Both count rental days from pickup day to return day and charge for late returns.
Plan the pickup around your landing time: eConnect serves Haneda only in Terminal 1 on weekdays, and Japan Wireless does not ship to Airbnb flats. Drop the envelope in a post box before the airport security check, because Japan Wireless points out there are none behind it.
An eSIM skips all of this. The QR code arrives by email, you install it at home, and the validity starts with the first connection to the partner network in Japan. You have 120 days after buying to install it.
Do eSIMs and routers work on the Shinkansen and in the countryside?
Both work along the main routes, on different networks. The POVNOMAD eSIM runs on NTT Docomo or KDDI/au in 4G and 5G, Airalo and Holafly name SoftBank and KDDI, and both routers run on SoftBank. Travel blogs report that Docomo reaches furthest in the countryside and on Hokkaido. Our guide to networks and regions in Japan links a coverage map.
On the Shinkansen, navigation keeps running, and in the long mountain tunnels the connection drops for a moment on every network. JR Central lists the free Shinkansen Free Wi-Fi on the Tokaido, San’yo and Kyushu Shinkansen. You log in through the browser. Download your ticket and the map for the leg before you board.
What changes on an autumn foliage trip?
Autumn colours peak late in the big cities. In its first forecast of 2 September 2026, the Japan Meteorological Corporation expects red maple leaves in Sapporo around 7 November, in Tokyo around 29 November, in Osaka around 4 December and in Kyoto around 11 December, six days later than average. Ginkgo trees turn yellow earlier, in Kyoto around 27 November. The next forecast is due in early October.
On foliage days you need maps, train apps and the translator from the first temple to the last illumination. A router battery lasts 8 to 10 hours, so carry the power bank. In crowded Kyoto temples a group splits up fast, and then only the person holding the router stays online. For a late-November fortnight, Unlimited Smart costs €19.90 for 15 days. If you stay on for the Kyoto maples in December, 21 days cost €22.90.
Which option fits which trip?
One week alone in Tokyo: Unlimited Smart for 7 days at €10.90.
A couple on a two-week rail-pass loop: two Smart eSIMs for €39.80, or one Unlimited L for €32.90 shared by hotspot.
A family of four with tablets: a router, from €65.45 for 14 days. If only the parents need mobile data and the tablets wait for hotel Wi-Fi, two Smart eSIMs at €39.80 cost less.
Streaming or daily video uploads on your own: Unlimited L with 2 GB a day, or Airalo with 3 GB a day, which suits that job better. The unlimited plans overview explains the tiers.
A phone without eSIM support: a router or a physical prepaid SIM. Where tourists get a prepaid SIM in Japan and when you need a passport is in Japan SIM card for tourists. Dial *#06# first. If an EID appears, your phone takes an eSIM, and GSMArena lists compatible models.
Japan and South Korea on one trip: the Japan & South Korea eSIM covers both with one profile, Unlimited Smart at €35.90 for 15 days. Korean provider prices sit in the South Korea eSIM comparison, Japan’s rank among 95 countries in the travel eSIM price study 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Is an eSIM or a pocket WiFi cheaper for Japan?
For one or two people, the eSIM. Fifteen days of POVNOMAD Unlimited Smart cost €19.90, Airalo €43.50 and Holafly €46.90. Renting an unlimited router for 14 days costs €65.45 at eConnect Japan and €76.32 at Japan Wireless, including delivery or pickup fee. Can I share my eSIM with my family through a hotspot?
Yes, every POVNOMAD eSIM allows hotspot, and all devices share one daily allowance: 1 GB at full speed on Unlimited Smart, 2 GB on Unlimited L, then 1 Mbit/s. That covers a couple using maps and messengers. Four people with two streaming tablets come to about 3.7 GB a day on our data calculator, and a router suits that better.
Where do I pick up a pocket WiFi and how do I return it?
Japan Wireless hands routers out at Narita, Haneda Terminal 3, Kansai and three other airports for a ¥500 fee. eConnect Japan uses Narita, Haneda Terminal 1 on weekdays, Chubu and New Chitose. Both also deliver to hotels. You return the router in the prepaid envelope through any Japanese post box before security. As of 29 September 2026.
Does mobile internet work on the Shinkansen?
Yes. Navigation keeps running on eSIMs and routers, and in the long mountain tunnels the connection drops for a moment on every network. JR Central lists the free Shinkansen Free Wi-Fi on the Tokaido, San’yo and Kyushu Shinkansen, with a login in the browser. Download your ticket and the map for the leg before you board. As of 29 September 2026.
Will I get a Japanese phone number with a travel eSIM?
No. POVNOMAD, Airalo and Holafly sell data-only eSIMs for Japan, and a pocket WiFi has no number either. Your home SIM stays active next to the eSIM, so you keep your number for calls, SMS and banking codes, while WhatsApp and LINE calls run over data. Your home operator may charge roaming for calls and SMS. As of 29 September 2026.
My phone has no eSIM. What are my options in Japan?
A pocket WiFi or a physical prepaid SIM card. Test first by dialling *#06#: if an EID appears, your phone takes an eSIM after all, and GSMArena lists compatible models. Maps, translation, train apps and messengers usually stay under 1 GB a day, which fits Unlimited Smart at €19.90 for 15 days. With daily photo uploads or streaming, Unlimited L with 2 GB a day fits better, at €32.90 for 15 days. The JMC forecast of 2 September 2026 puts red maple leaves between 7 November in Sapporo and 11 December in Kyoto.
