Thailand eSIM with a phone number — is that possible?

Why so many people search for this

The question is not a footnote. The study counts phrasings, not search volume, so it shows that people ask this, not how often.

Behind it sits almost always the same worry, and it has little to do with Thailand: if I swap my SIM card for an eSIM, will my family, my job and my bank still reach me? The answer is yes, because you are not swapping anything.

What runs over which line

An eSIM-capable phone keeps two profiles active at once. Your home SIM stays where it is, and the Thailand eSIM joins it as a second profile. From then on the two split the work:

• Data runs over the Thailand eSIM, on AIS or TrueMove with 4G and 5G. That is what you bought it for.
• Calls and texts keep running over your home number, on your home operator’s network.
• WhatsApp, Signal, FaceTime and Telegram are tied to the home number you registered with, but they only need a data connection to work — and the travel eSIM provides it. The product page puts it plainly: “Can I keep using WhatsApp with my regular number? Yes. Your normal SIM stays active alongside it and WhatsApp keeps running on your number.”

What the travel eSIM cannot do: place ordinary phone calls and receive texts. It has no number of its own for anyone to text. Calls go over the data connection, which means over a messenger.

Step by step: staying reachable

Setting this up takes a few minutes, and it belongs at home on Wi-Fi rather than at the gate.

1. Check that your phone supports eSIM. Dial *#06#. If an EID number appears, the device is eSIM-capable. The product page names, among others, iPhone 13 and SE 2nd generation upwards, Samsung Galaxy S21 upwards and Google Pixel 6 upwards.
2. Buy the eSIM before you fly. The QR code reaches you by email and WhatsApp within minutes, and you have 100 days after the purchase to install it.
3. Install it calmly at home. It costs you no travel days: validity starts with the first connection in Thailand, not with the purchase and not with the installation.
4. Label both profiles. “Home” and “Thailand” instead of two lines both called “Cellular” saves you guessing later which line is doing what.
5. After landing, put data on the travel eSIM. In your mobile settings, pick the Thailand eSIM as the line for mobile data and switch data roaming on for it. Without that tick it stays silent.
6. Switch data roaming off on your home SIM. This is the one step that decides your bill. The home SIM stays switched on and therefore reachable, it just stops pulling data.
7. Leave your home number as the default line for calls and, on iPhone, turn off “Allow Cellular Data Switching”. Otherwise the phone can quietly fall back to the home line for data.

After that you do nothing more. Incoming calls ring as usual, WhatsApp runs on the Thailand eSIM’s data, and your domestic allowance stays untouched.

Does POVNOMAD sell an eSIM with its own number?

Reachability on your home number runs on your operator’s roaming tariff, and Thailand sits outside EU roaming rules. What an answered call or a received text costs you there is set out in your contract’s roaming price list — read it before you fly rather than on the invoice.
