Holafly sells unlimited plans only, 30 days cost €84.90. “–” = no such plan. POVNOMAD has no unlimited plan for Argentina alone; the South America eSIM gives 1 GB at full speed per 24 hours, then unlimited at up to 1 Mbit/s.

Among the three travel eSIMs, POVNOMAD had the lowest price for every fixed data size in this table on 29 October 2026. Against a local tourist pack none of them keeps up: 25 GB from Personal cost €14.54, our 20 GB cost €41.90.

Why is a local SIM so hard to get in Argentina?

Because every line has to be linked to a verified person, and the online checks are built for Argentine ID cards. The regulator ENACOM tightened its rules for identifying mobile users with Resolution 263/2023 (Boletín Oficial, 17 March 2023). A line without a validated user carries no calls, SMS or data, except calls to customer service and emergency numbers (Marval O’Farrell Mairal, 3 April 2023). For foreigners without a DNI the operator takes your passport or travel document and records how long you stay, so it can switch the line off afterwards (El Cronista, 17 March 2023).

The online validation asks for the DNI number, the sex printed on it and the DNI’s procedure number (Resolution 1391/2024, as summarised by Estudio O’Farrell on 21 January 2025). A passport has none of these. Personal says it plainly: self-activation by web or *234# works only with documents of the Argentine Republic, and anyone with a foreign document has to go to a Personal branch (personal.com.ar, 29 October 2026). If you bought a Personal chip at a kiosk, a Personal sales point has to activate it.

The three operators handle tourists differently, according to their own pages on 29 October 2026:

Personal: chips from Personal shops are already active; kiosk chips need activation in a shop with your DNI or passport.

Claro: the physical Chip Turista is sold in Claro customer centres, which activate it on the spot; you need your passport and the line number. Claro also offers to activate a tourist eSIM “100% online”. We could not test that flow.

Movistar: buy the chip at a kiosk, then send “#NOMI” to Movistar on WhatsApp and submit the requested data.

Our founder Daniel describes how this played out for him in Buenos Aires (report published in May 2025). At the airport he found no physical SIM cards, only eSIMs that required a passport photo by e-mail first. A Claro store offered him only its expensive tourist SIM. A small shop sold him a SIM for one to two euros and activated it with a photo of his passport. Topping up failed because shops rejected or blocked his foreign credit cards, so an Argentine friend topped up the line with cash he gave her. The whole process took about two hours. This is one traveller’s experience, not a rule; Argentina’s tourism board listed a Personal stand at Ezeiza’s departures terminal in May 2025.

What do tourists actually need to buy a SIM in Argentina?

Your passport. Without it, no operator registers the line.

An unlocked phone. A phone locked to a German network will not accept an Argentine SIM.

Time for a shop visit: Claro sells its Chip Turista only in its customer centres, and a Personal kiosk chip needs activation in a Personal shop.

Pesos in cash for kiosk top-ups. Personal’s app accepts cards from 4,000 pesos, but our founder’s foreign cards were rejected when he topped up.

Wi-Fi or a working data connection for Movistar’s WhatsApp activation.

A dual-SIM phone if you want to keep receiving SMS codes from your bank on your home number.

You do not need a DNI, a CUIT or an Argentine address.

Official rate, MEP or blue dollar: what does a SIM cost in euros?

For years tourists changed cash at the “blue” street rate because it paid far more pesos than the official rate. On 29 October 2026 that gap had almost closed:

Rate on 29 October 2026

Pesos per US dollar

Source

Official reference rate (Comunicación A 3500)

1,539.00

BCRA

Banco Nación, selling rate

1,560.00

ámbito, DolarHoy

MEP dollar (via bonds)

1,560.77 to 1,568.80

ámbito, DolarHoy

Blue dollar, selling rate

1,565.00

ámbito, DolarHoy

Euro, BCRA reference

1,719.06 per euro

BCRA

Closing values of 29 October 2026 from the BCRA exchange rate API, ámbito.com and dolarhoy.com, retrieved 30 October 2026 at 00:04.

The blue rate paid 0.3 percent more than Banco Nación. Changing money on the street gains you almost nothing. The bigger effect for travellers is inflation: consumer prices rose 33.4 percent in the twelve months to September 2026 (INDEC, published 13 October 2026), while the dollar costs only 7.2 percent more pesos than a year earlier (BCRA reference rate 1,436 on 29 October 2025). In euros, Argentina has become more expensive, SIM packs included. Older guides that quote SIM prices in pesos from 2024 or 2025 are out of date.

Will you have signal in Patagonia?

In the towns, mostly yes. On the long stretches between them, often not. No operator publishes a coverage figure for Patagonia, so we rely on two sources that measure different things.

Operator

Coverage Experience (Opensignal, out of 10)

Visit Argentina on the far south

Personal

7.1

“more limited in the southern region (Patagonia)”

Claro

6.5

strong signal “including Patagonia”, according to travellers

Movistar

4.9

may have weaker coverage in Patagonia

Sources: Opensignal, Argentina Mobile Network Experience, November 2023 (measured 1 August to 29 October 2023 on users’ phones, nationwide; no newer Argentina report found); Visit Argentina, 21 May 2025.

Both sources put Movistar last outside the cities. That matters for travel eSIMs: POVNOMAD, Airalo and Holafly all name Movistar or Telefónica as their network in Argentina. Holafly writes that reception can drop out on parts of Ruta 40, in parts of Patagonia, in the Puna and in Tierra del Fuego outside Ushuaia (esim.holafly.com, 29 October 2026). Travellers on Ruta 40 report long stretches without any signal between towns.

For a road trip through Patagonia, a Claro chip bought in a larger town is the safer choice for coverage. Visit Argentina suggests the same combination: a SIM or eSIM for Buenos Aires and the north, a Claro chip for the south. Download offline maps before you leave a town, whatever SIM you use.

When is the eSIM the better choice, and when is it not?

The local SIM is the better deal for anyone who stays a week or longer, needs more than about 3 GB and can spend an hour in an operator shop. Personal’s 25 GB for 30 days cost €14.54; our 5 GB for 30 days cost €12.90 and our 20 GB €41.90. You also get an Argentine number. For Patagonia, a Claro chip offers better coverage than any Movistar-based eSIM.

The eSIM fits better in these cases:

You want maps, Uber and messages working at Ezeiza or Aeroparque, without a shop visit and a passport check. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi (instructions for iPhone and Android); validity starts on first contact with an Argentine network.

You stay a few days and need little data: 1 GB for 7 days costs €3.90, 3 GB for 15 days €8.90, less than either tourist pack.

Argentina is one stop of several. The South America eSIM covers Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay on one profile, from €4.90 for 1 GB over 7 days. Brazil has its own rules for local SIMs, see our Brazil SIM card guide.

You want the eSIM as a backup for the first day and buy a local chip later in town.

One honest point: our Argentina eSIM uses Movistar 4G only, the network with the lowest coverage score in Opensignal’s test, and we have no unlimited plan for Argentina alone. This guide is also available in German and Spanish.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a SIM card cost in Argentina?

Personal’s Pack Turista costs 25,000 pesos (about €14.54) for 25 GB over 30 days, Claro’s Chip Turista 31,900 pesos (€18.56) for 25 GB over 30 days. Both include free WhatsApp. As of 29 October 2026, at the BCRA rate of €1 = 1,719.06 ARS.

Can I buy a SIM card at Ezeiza airport?

Possibly at the Personal stand in the departures terminal, which Argentina’s tourism board listed in May 2025 and which usually takes cards only. The same source found no Claro stand there, and our founder found no physical SIMs at the airport on his trip. The safer plan is an eSIM for arrival and a local chip in the city.

Do I need a DNI to get an Argentine SIM card?

No, a passport is enough, but you have to show it in person. Under ENACOM Resolution 263/2023 operators register foreigners with their passport or travel document and record the length of stay. Online self-activation asks for DNI data, so it does not work for tourists.

Why can’t I activate my Personal SIM online?

Personal’s web and *234# activation asks for your DNI number, sex and DNI procedure number. On 29 October 2026 Personal stated that this applies only to Argentine documents and that holders of foreign documents must go to a branch. Movistar’s WhatsApp activation with “#NOMI” is one remote alternative.

Which network has the widest coverage in Patagonia?

Claro, according to Argentina’s tourism board in May 2025. Opensignal’s nationwide test from November 2023 ranks Personal first (7.1 of 10), Claro second (6.5) and Movistar last (4.9). Travel eSIMs from POVNOMAD, Airalo and Holafly run on Movistar.

Should I change money at the blue dollar rate to buy my SIM?

It no longer pays. On 29 October 2026 the blue dollar sold at 1,565 pesos and Banco Nación at 1,560, a difference of 0.3 percent. Cash still helps for kiosk top-ups, where foreign cards may be rejected.

Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM in Argentina?

Yes, from about 5 GB upwards. Personal gives 25 GB for 30 days at €14.54, while 20 GB on the POVNOMAD eSIM cost €41.90. For short trips the eSIM costs less: 1 GB for 7 days at €3.90 or 3 GB for 15 days at €8.90. As of 29 October 2026.

How do I know if these prices are still current?

Every price on this page was read on 29 October 2026 on personal.com.ar, claro.com.ar and povnomad.com, and in the night to 30 October on airalo.com and esim.holafly.com.
