Prices as of 3 October 2026. The eSIM runs on one network only, Orange Maroc’s 4G network. We have no variant on Maroc Telecom and none that switches between several networks.

Orange is fast where it has signal: nPerf rated it the best-performing mobile network in Morocco in 2025. It reaches fewer places than its two rivals, though. In Opensignal’s measurements from January to March 2026, Orange scored 7.8 out of 10 for Coverage Experience, Maroc Telecom 9.2 and inwi 9.1. Our eSIM uses Orange’s 4G network. In Marrakech, Fès and Essaouira, Orange has upgraded its network in town. On the way through the High Atlas and to the Sahara dunes, plan for stretches without signal.

Which network does the eSIM use, and how does Orange compare?

Morocco has three mobile operators: Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi. Our Morocco eSIM connects to Orange’s 4G network, so Orange’s reach is your reach. Two measurement firms compare the three networks:

Metric (source, period)

Orange

Maroc Telecom

inwi

Coverage Experience, 0 to 10 points (Opensignal, Jan to Mar 2026)

7.8

9.2

9.1

Time with a mobile data connection (Opensignal)

95.5%

94.6%

95.0%

Download Speed Experience (Opensignal)

23.7 Mbit/s

27.5 Mbit/s

22.8 Mbit/s

nPerf score 2025 (nPoints)

74,096

71,158

63,089

Sources: Opensignal, Morocco Mobile Network Experience Report, April 2026, data from 1 January to 31 March 2026; nPerf, mobile internet barometer Morocco 2025, published January 2026; both read on 30 September 2026. Coverage Experience measures a network’s reach in the places where people live, work and travel. Time on network counts how often users are connected in the places they visit most; Opensignal notes that it says nothing about remote rural areas.

In the towns where most people spend their day, Orange customers are online as often as everyone else. Across the map, Maroc Telecom and inwi reach more places. Neither firm publishes figures per route or per valley.

Holafly names three networks on its Morocco page: INWI, Maroc Telecom (IAM) and Orange Morocco. A plan with several networks can hold a signal where only Maroc Telecom transmits. For 15 days Holafly charges €53.90, we charge €30.90. Airalo names Orange with LTE, the same network as ours (all read on 30 September 2026).

Where does Orange have signal on a loop through Morocco?

Orange publishes a list of 135 towns where it has upgraded its network. It is the only public source we found that names individual places. The list covers Orange’s latest network upgrade. Our eSIM runs on Orange’s 4G/LTE network, so read the list as a sign of where Orange has built out in town. The table follows a classic loop from Marrakech over the Atlas to the Sahara, north to Fès and Chefchaouen, plus the coast:

Stop

On Orange’s upgrade list?

What to plan for

Marrakech

yes

offline map for the medina lanes

Ourika Valley, Imlil, Toubkal

no (Imlil and Asni not listed)

download maps in Marrakech before you head up

Tizi n’Tichka pass (N9)

Aït Ourir before the climb and Ouarzazate after it: yes; the pass: no data

offline map for the whole pass road

Aït-Ben-Haddou, Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate yes, Aït-Ben-Haddou not listed

upload photos in Ouarzazate

Dadès and Todra gorges (Boumalne, Tinghir)

no

offline map; book a riad with Wi-Fi

Merzouga, Erg Chebbi

Errachidia yes; Erfoud, Rissani and Merzouga not listed

ask the desert camp about Wi-Fi before you book

Zagora, Erg Chegaga

Zagora yes, M’Hamid not listed

send large files from Zagora

Fès

yes

offline map for the medina lanes

Chefchaouen

yes

offline map for hikes in the surrounding hills

Essaouira

yes

nothing special

Agadir, Taghazout

Agadir and Aourir on the coast road yes, Taghazout not listed

nothing special

Tangier (ferry port)

yes

see the ferry section below

Source: Orange Maroc, list of towns (PDF) and orange.ma, read on 30 September 2026. A blank area can mean no signal or simply no tests.

How do you stay online where Orange drops out?

Download offline areas in Google Maps on Wi-Fi for the High Atlas, the Drâa valley and the area around Merzouga, and save tickets and riad addresses as screenshots. Many banks approve withdrawals abroad by push message in their app, so you also need data at the cash machine; bank by bank in our guide to ATM fees in Morocco. Ask your desert camp before booking whether it has Wi-Fi. Send large files from the last town on Orange’s list: Errachidia before Merzouga, Ouarzazate before the gorges, Zagora before Erg Chegaga.

Our eSIM carries data only. WhatsApp calls work over it, normal calls and texts do not. Keep your home SIM active for texts with its data roaming switched off. If you want a Moroccan number or Maroc Telecom coverage, our guide Morocco SIM card for tourists shows what a local SIM costs.

How much data does a road trip use: unlimited or a data pack?

Google Maps navigation uses about 2 MB a minute, or 120 MB an hour, according to the German mobile provider ALDI TALK. Five hours at the wheel come to about 0.6 GB. Video uses far more: Netflix puts one hour in standard definition at up to 1 GB and in HD at up to 3 GB.

Unlimited Smart’s 1 GB a day covers navigation, WhatsApp and photos; after that you continue at 1 Mbit/s. If you spend your evenings on the riad Wi-Fi, a data pack costs less: 10 GB for 30 days at €14.90 lasts two weeks at 0.7 GB a day. Airalo sells unlimited data for Morocco for up to 10 days and slows to 1 Mbit/s after 3 GB a day. Holafly names no daily threshold, says throttling lasts one day at most and limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB a day. POVNOMAD sets no separate hotspot cap. Prices can change.

Unlimited Smart costs a little over half of Airalo’s and Holafly’s price for a week. For two weeks it costs €30.90 against Holafly’s €53.90, and Airalo has no unlimited plan that long. Holafly’s edge is its network list. If you stream every evening without Wi-Fi, Unlimited L with 2 GB a day costs €25.90 for 7 days, still below both. Our Morocco eSIM comparison covers all durations from 3 to 30 days.

What about the ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras to Tangier?

On board, your phone may connect to the ship’s own network, which runs over satellite. EU roaming rules do not apply there, even in Spanish waters. Vodafone Germany charges €1.18 per 50 kB in its maritime data zone, more than €20 per megabyte; 1&1 lists €19.67 per MB and blocks ship data for now; Telekom opens data only after you book a special pass (teltarif.de, September 2026). Spain’s Movistar charges €36.30 per MB in its maritime zone and €12.10 per MB in Morocco at its standard rate (movistar.es, 30 September 2026).

Close to an EU external border, your phone can also log on to a land network outside the EU, teltarif writes. Movistar warns its customers that on a boat or near a border the phone may connect to operators of neighbouring countries. From Tarifa, the nearest foreign networks are Moroccan.

Before you board, switch your home SIM to airplane mode or turn off its data roaming. Keep the Morocco eSIM switched off until Tangier: its validity starts at the first contact with the partner network, and that contact could already happen on the Spanish coast. Install the eSIM at home, since installation needs an internet connection.

What if Morocco is one stop on a longer trip?

Our Morocco eSIM works in Morocco only. If you continue to Tunisia, our guide to Tunisia eSIM signal in Djerba, Hammamet and Sousse covers the network there. For several North African countries on one profile, our Africa eSIM for 21 countries covers Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt, from €7.90 for 1 GB over 7 days. Its product page lists example networks, not the one it uses in Morocco.

Frequently asked questions

Which network has the best coverage in the Sahara and the Atlas?

Maroc Telecom leads Opensignal’s Coverage Experience with 9.2 out of 10, ahead of inwi with 9.1 and Orange with 7.8 (January to March 2026). Neither Opensignal nor nPerf publishes figures per desert route or mountain valley. Our Morocco eSIM uses Orange only, so download offline maps before the Atlas and the Sahara.

Does the POVNOMAD Morocco eSIM use Maroc Telecom?

No. Our Morocco eSIM connects only to Orange Maroc’s 4G network. We offer no variant on Maroc Telecom and none that switches between networks (as of 30 September 2026). Holafly names INWI, Maroc Telecom and Orange for Morocco.

How much does an eSIM cost for a one- or two-week road trip in Morocco?

POVNOMAD Unlimited Smart costs €16.90 for 7 days and €30.90 for 15 days, with 1 GB of high-speed data a day and then 1 Mbit/s. Holafly charges €28.90 and €53.90. Airalo charges €32.00 for 7 days and sells no unlimited plan longer than 10 days. POVNOMAD prices as of 3 October 2026, Airalo and Holafly 30 September 2026.

Is there mobile signal in Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes?

Errachidia is on Orange’s list of upgraded towns, Erfoud, Rissani and Merzouga are not. Neither Opensignal nor nPerf publishes figures for the dunes. Ask your camp about Wi-Fi before you book and send large files from Errachidia.

How much data does navigation use on a Morocco road trip?

About 120 MB an hour with Google Maps, according to ALDI TALK. Five hours of driving come to about 0.6 GB, which fits into the 1 GB a day of Unlimited Smart. Offline maps cut the amount and keep working where Orange has no signal.

Will my phone roam on the ferry from Tarifa to Tangier?

It can. Ships run their own satellite networks where EU roaming does not apply: Vodafone Germany charges €1.18 per 50 kB, Movistar €36.30 per MB. Near Tarifa your phone can also log on to a Moroccan network. Switch your home SIM to airplane mode before boarding and turn on the Morocco eSIM in Tangier.

Does the eSIM work in Chefchaouen and Fès?

Yes. Our eSIM uses Orange’s 4G network there, and Orange lists both towns among those where it has upgraded its network (30 September 2026). Download an offline map for the medina lanes all the same, and for walks in the hills around Chefchaouen.

As of 30 September 2026, POVNOMAD prices as of 3 October 2026.
