Airalo slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day.

For the first three routes we cost less than half of what the other two charge. The last row is different: if you need more than 2 GB of high-speed data every day, Airalo gives you 3 GB a day for €0.60 more than our Unlimited L. For a month with Wi-Fi at the coworking space, 20 GB for 30 days costs €15.90 with us, 50 GB costs €29.90. The full price table is in our Bali eSIM comparison, and our unlimited eSIM page explains the tiers.

Do you have to register your phone’s IMEI in Indonesia?

Only if you want to use an Indonesian SIM card. Indonesian customs (Bea Cukai) requires phones and tablets brought from abroad to be registered by their IMEI to get service on Indonesian mobile networks. Without registration, the device is blocked for use with Indonesian SIM cards (as of 30.09.2026). Import duties may apply when you register. What a Telkomsel tourist SIM costs and how the 90-day IMEI registration at the operator counter works is in our guide Bali and Indonesia SIM card for tourists.

Travellers who use a foreign SIM in roaming, known as inbound roamers, don’t need to register and can use international roaming directly. The Indonesian tax news service DDTC quoted this from the customs website on 2 January 2023 (DDTCNews). Our Indonesia eSIM is a foreign roaming profile: you turn on data roaming for it, and according to the product page your traffic exits via Singapore. If you buy a local tourist SIM instead, you register the phone at the operator’s shop for stays of up to 90 days.

Does mobile data work on Nyepi?

Plan without it. For Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence, the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs asked all operators in Bali in 2026 to switch off mobile internet from 19 March, 6 am, to 20 March, 6 am local time (Circular Letter No. 2 of 2026, reported by CNBC Indonesia). Vital facilities were exempt, and afterwards the ministry reviewed operators that had kept data running. The letter was addressed to the network operators; the reports we read say nothing about roaming customers.

Nyepi 2027 falls on 8 March according to the Balinese calendar. If you are in Bali that day, ask your accommodation about Wi-Fi and download what you need the evening before. Lombok and the Gilis are outside the province of Bali and were not covered by the 2026 letter.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work on Nusa Penida and the Gili Islands?

Yes. An Indonesia eSIM covers every island in the country, so you keep the same profile on Nusa Penida, the Gilis and Lombok. A field test by the travel blog Unusual Nomad (September 2026) found the weakest signal on Nusa Penida’s west-coast cliffs and on Gili Meno. No provider guarantees reception at a specific spot.

Which network is best in Bali: Telkomsel, XL or Indosat?

It depends on what you measure. From April to June 2026, Opensignal gave Telkomsel the national coverage award (8.6 of 10 points), while Indosat and XL shared the reliability and consistent quality awards in the Bali and Nusa Tenggara region. POVNOMAD’s Indonesia eSIM uses Telkomsel, XL and three more networks, but not Indosat.

Do I need to register my phone’s IMEI if I use an eSIM in Indonesia?

Not with a foreign roaming eSIM. According to Indonesian customs, as quoted by DDTCNews, travellers using a foreign SIM as inbound roamers need no IMEI registration. Registration is required for Indonesian SIM cards; for stays of up to 90 days you register at the operator’s shop. Import duties may apply.

Is mobile internet switched off in Bali on Nyepi?

In 2026 the ministry asked all operators in Bali to switch off mobile data for 24 hours, from 19 March, 6 am, to 20 March, 6 am local time. Nyepi 2027 falls on 8 March. Plan to use your accommodation’s Wi-Fi that day. Lombok and the Gilis were not covered.

Do I need a new eSIM for Lombok and the Gili Islands?

No. Lombok and the Gilis belong to West Nusa Tenggara, which is still Indonesia, so your Indonesia eSIM keeps working. With POVNOMAD, Unlimited Smart for 21 days costs €24.90, enough for three weeks of island hopping. Airalo and Holafly have no 21-day plan and charge €62.50 and €68.90 for 30 days. As of 30.09.2026.

Unlimited or a data package for two weeks in Bali?

For maps, messaging and bookings, 10 GB for 30 days at €9.90 is enough. If you want to stop counting, Unlimited Smart for 15 days costs €17.90 with 1 GB of high-speed data a day. If you need more than 2 GB a day, Airalo’s 15-day unlimited plan with 3 GB a day costs €43.50. As of 30.09.2026.

Can I share my Bali eSIM data with a laptop?

Yes. Hotspot is included in every POVNOMAD Indonesia plan. Holafly limits sharing to 1 GB per day of validity, so 7 GB in total on a 7-day plan. Airalo’s Indonesia page gives no hotspot figure.

As of 30 September 2026.
