In rural areas, 4G reached 93% of people in the Western Cape, 99% in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo, and 100% in Mpumalanga. Those are the provinces of the Garden Route, the Drakensberg and Kruger.

Region

Province

Rural 4G coverage (ICASA, 2025)

What to plan for

Garden Route

Western Cape, Eastern Cape

93% / 99% of people

download offline maps for hikes and gravel side roads

Kruger National Park

Mpumalanga, Limpopo

100% / 99% of people

phone use only in camps, at gates and in emergencies (SANParks rule)

Drakensberg

KwaZulu-Natal

99% of people

signal on ridges rather than in valleys; sometimes only SMS gets through

Population coverage counts people within reach of a 4G signal, not square kilometres. National parks and mountain areas have few inhabitants, so coverage there can be much lower than these figures. Source: ICASA, State of the ICT Sector in South Africa, March 2026, read on 30.09.2026.

In Kruger, the rules matter as much as the signal. SANParks allows cell phone use only in camps, at gates and in emergencies, sets speed limits of 50 km/h on tar and 40 km/h on gravel, and expects you to be inside a camp or out of the gate by gate closing time (SANParks vital information). Plan each day’s route with an offline map before you leave camp.

In the Drakensberg, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife manages most hiking areas, and you fill in its mountain rescue register at the park office before you set off. The Drakensberg guide Vertical Endeavour notes that coverage keeps improving, but you may need to climb a ridge for signal and sometimes only a text gets through. Our eSIMs carry data only, so keep your home SIM active for texts on a mountain day.

Does load-shedding still cut mobile signal?

Not at the moment. South Africa has gone 497 consecutive days without load-shedding since 16 May 2025, Eskom reported on 25 September 2026. What remains is local load reduction in areas with illegal connections: 247,617 customers, or 3.4% of Eskom’s customer base, all in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Limpopo are free of load reduction. Eskom has not yet published its Summer Outlook for 2026/27. Older guides still warn about blackouts because the summer of 2023/24 brought 176 days of load-shedding, according to Eskom.

Operators keep batteries and generators for power cuts. In the 12 months to 30 September 2025 they bought 84,829 batteries for R387.7 million and 1,969 generators for R426.8 million, according to ICASA. Keep a charged power bank in the car all the same.

How much data does navigation use?

Around 2 MB a minute, or 120 MB an hour, while Google Maps guides you, according to the German mobile provider ALDI TALK. Searching places and zooming into the map uses more. Four hours at the wheel add up to about 0.5 GB, which fits into the 1 GB a day of Unlimited Smart. After that, the speed drops to 1 Mbit/s, which our product page describes as enough for maps and WhatsApp.

Offline maps cut that further. Download the offline areas in Google Maps for Kruger and the Drakensberg while you are on Wi-Fi.

Unlimited or fixed data: which plan fits your route?

One week on the Garden Route, two weeks with Kruger, or a month round the country. After the daily high-speed allowance, POVNOMAD and Airalo slow to 1 Mbit/s until the next day. Holafly names no threshold and says any throttling lasts one day at most; it limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB a day. Airalo and Holafly list no 21-day plan for South Africa; ours costs €44.90 with Unlimited Smart.

Unlimited Smart costs just over half of Airalo’s price and less than half of Holafly’s for a week, and stays cheapest at 15 and 30 days. It suits a road trip where you navigate, message and upload photos but stream little. If you share a hotspot with a laptop or stream every evening, compare our Unlimited L with Airalo: L wins for a week, Airalo from ten days. The 20 GB plan beats every unlimited plan from two weeks on if your lodges have Wi-Fi. Our South Africa eSIM comparison covers networks, hotspot rules and fair use in more detail.

What works when you cross into Lesotho, Eswatini or Mozambique?

A South Africa eSIM works in South Africa only. For Eswatini, between Kruger and KwaZulu-Natal, our Eswatini eSIM starts at €10.90, and for Mozambique, east of Kruger, the Mozambique eSIM starts at €8.90.

Our Africa eSIM for 29 countries covers South Africa, Eswatini and Botswana on one profile, with fixed data only: 5 GB for 30 days cost €29.90. For Botswana alone, our Botswana eSIM starts at €9.90 for 1 GB over seven days. The Africa eSIM does not cover Lesotho, Mozambique or Namibia. We have no eSIM for Namibia. As of 30 September 2026.

What else do you need on the road?

Save the emergency numbers 10111 (police), 10177 (ambulance) and 112 in your phone. South African SIM cards are on sale at the airport.

Cash is the other practical question on the road. Our guide to ATM fees in South Africa lists which banks charge what.

Frequently asked questions

Which eSIM is cheapest for a two-week road trip in South Africa?

POVNOMAD Unlimited Smart costs €32.90 for 15 days, with 1 GB of high-speed data a day and then 1 Mbit/s. Airalo charges €46.50 for 15 days of unlimited data and Holafly €58.90. If you use lodge Wi-Fi in the evenings, our 20 GB plan for 30 days costs €29.90. As of 30.09.2026.

Is there mobile signal in Kruger National Park?

Kruger lies in Mpumalanga and Limpopo, where ICASA puts rural 4G population coverage at 100% and 99% for 2025, but inside the park the signal varies. SANParks allows phone use only in camps, at gates and in emergencies. Download the park map offline before each game drive and check your route in camp.

Does load-shedding affect mobile signal in 2026?

Not at the moment. Eskom reported 497 consecutive days without load-shedding on 25 September 2026. Local load reduction still affects 3.4% of Eskom’s customers, all in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Operators keep batteries and generators for power cuts.

How much data do I need for navigation on a road trip?

Around 120 MB per hour of Google Maps navigation, according to ALDI TALK; searching and zooming use more. Four hours of driving come to about 0.5 GB, so 1 GB a day of Unlimited Smart covers navigation, messaging and some photos. Offline maps reduce the amount further.

Does my South Africa eSIM work in Lesotho or Eswatini?

No. A South Africa eSIM works in South Africa only. For the Sani Pass into Lesotho you need a Lesotho eSIM, from €12.90 for 1 GB over seven days. For Eswatini, our Eswatini eSIM starts at €10.90, and our Africa eSIM for 29 countries covers South Africa and Eswatini with 5 GB for €29.90. As of 30.09.2026.

Can I call or text with the eSIM in the Drakensberg?

Our South Africa eSIM carries data only, so WhatsApp calls work, normal calls and texts do not. In the Drakensberg, a weak signal sometimes lets only a text through, so keep your home SIM active for texts. Fill in the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife mountain rescue register before every hike.

Do I need RICA registration for an eSIM in South Africa?

No. You buy our eSIM online and install it before you leave. RICA registration applies to local SIM cards, and according to industry sources it requires your original passport and proof of address.

As of 30 September 2026.
