The remaining values come from the single source. HSBC and Santander additionally apply a conversion surcharge, 7 percent in Santander’s case.

Why we are cautious about Santander

Our dataset lists Santander at 220 pesos, making it the most expensive machine in the country. Independent guides contradict that clearly and quote figures from around 36 pesos. That is a sixfold difference we cannot resolve.

So we treat no figure as settled. What can be said: BBVA and Santander are consistently described as among the more expensive options, and Santander adds a 7 percent conversion surcharge if you fail to decline. Read the fee display before confirming.

This matters particularly because “Santander” is a familiar name to many European visitors. Familiarity is not a pricing argument in Mexico.

The machines to avoid

Alongside bank ATMs, Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Vallarta and the zócalos of most cities host free-standing units from independent operators, Euronet among them. They carry no bank logo and do not stand at a branch.

Independent reports put those at 150 to 200 pesos in fees plus a 6 to 10 percent markup on the exchange rate. Together that can add more than 600 pesos to a 5,000 peso withdrawal — against roughly 21 pesos at Caja Popular.

The rule is the same as in Egypt: use machines at or inside bank branches, and leave the free-standing units in tourist zones alone.

The second charge: conversion

Mexican machines almost always ask whether to bill you in euros or US dollars. The answer is no. Our dataset records an explicit 7 percent surcharge at Santander, HSBC names one too, and 6 to 10 percent is standard at the free-standing units.

On screen this appears as “Con conversión” against “Sin conversión”, or “With conversion” and “Without conversion”. Always take the option without conversion, settling in pesos. The full explanation is in With or without conversion? — the ATM screens are reproduced there.

What your own bank adds

The peso figures above are the Mexican operator’s charge and apply whoever issued your card. On top, most banks add a foreign transaction fee, commonly around 1 to 3 percent, and some add a flat charge per withdrawal.

The one documented exception is the alliance waiver already mentioned. Because the Mexican charge is flat, the usual rule applies: withdraw a lot once rather than a little several times. Scotiabank and Santander allow M$12,000 and M$12,500 per transaction; Inbursa may drop to M$2,000 depending on the machine’s cash.

We deliberately name no individual issuer’s terms; they change often, and only your bank can confirm them.

Why you want a signal at the machine

Two reasons. Many banks now require approval through a push notification in their app for withdrawals abroad, and with no data connection the card is declined. And with a tenfold price spread, it is worth checking on a map which bank is nearby before you insert the card.

A Mexico eSIM from POVNOMAD starts at €1.00. Install it at home by QR code; validity starts when it first connects in Mexico. Unlimited plans include tethering at no extra cost up to the daily allowance, after which the connection continues at 1 Mbit/s. How we compare with other providers is in our Mexico eSIM comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to withdraw cash in Mexico?

Between roughly 21 and nearly 200 pesos per withdrawal depending on the machine. Cheapest are Caja Popular (M$20.88), Inbursa (M$22.04) and BanBajío (M$23.20); most expensive is BBVA at M$197.20. Free-standing machines from independent operators in resort towns charge 150 to 200 pesos plus a 6 to 10 percent exchange rate markup. As of 12 September 2026.

Can I withdraw cash for free in Mexico?

At Scotiabank, if your card belongs to the Global ATM Alliance — Bank of America, Barclays, BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank, Scotiabank or Westpac. Members waive each other’s ATM fees. Every other card pays 30 to 130 pesos at Scotiabank. There is no universally fee-free bank in Mexico; the cheapest are then Caja Popular and Inbursa at just over 21 pesos.

Which ATM is most expensive in Mexico?

Among bank machines, BBVA at M$197.20 per withdrawal — a figure confirmed by two independent sources. Our dataset lists Santander at M$220, but independent guides quote considerably lower figures and we cannot resolve that contradiction. More expensive than either are the free-standing machines in tourist areas.

Are Euronet ATMs expensive in Mexico?

Yes. Free-standing machines from independent operators sit in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Puerto Vallarta exactly where visitors go. Independent reports cite 150 to 200 pesos in fees plus a 6 to 10 percent markup on the exchange rate. Use machines at or inside bank branches instead.

How much can I withdraw at once in Mexico?

Between M$2,000 and M$12,500 depending on the bank. The highest limits are Santander at M$12,500 and Scotiabank at M$12,000, the latter also serving as a daily cap. At several banks the limit depends on the machine’s cash holdings. Because the fee is flat, using the full limit pays.

Should I be charged in pesos or my home currency in Mexico?

In pesos. If the machine offers “Con conversión” or “With conversion”, decline. Our dataset records a 7 percent surcharge at Santander, and 6 to 10 percent is standard at free-standing machines. Declining lets your own bank convert at the far better Visa or Mastercard rate.

Do I need cash in Mexico?

Yes, though less in resort areas than inland. Hotels, larger restaurants and supermarkets take cards, but markets, street food, small shops, tips and many taxis are cash. Withdraw a larger amount at a cheap bank machine rather than topping up repeatedly at whatever is nearest.

Will my debit card work in Mexico?

Yes, provided it carries Visa or Mastercard and your bank has enabled withdrawals outside your home region. A credit card is the more reliable backup. Check in your online banking before you travel that international use is switched on.

In Mexico the same withdrawal costs 21 or 197 pesos depending on the machine — almost a tenfold difference.
